I'm hoping this is the right category for this thread, if it isn't then I apologise. :(

But does anyone know where I could get my hand on some used tickets? A strange request, I know, but I can explain; I collect old train tickets (I'm sure I'm not the only one, there must be a few others :p) but I don't get a lot of opportunities to travel on trains myself, so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of obtaining some used tickets.

I've had a look on ebay and found a couple of listings, but other than that I have no idea where else to look.

I apologise for the unusual request.

Mandatory post about them being non-transferable and property of the railway.

The tickets that are retained in some gates usually either go in the bin or for recycling. You could ask your local TOC if you could have some of them.

I was at Bath Spa a couple of weeks ago and a member of station staff was emptying the used tickets from the hoppers in the gates and pouring them into this man's bag for him. He had a learning disability and was quite clear he was a regular visitor to the station from the chatting between him and the station staff - and he left the station a happy man with a few thousand tickets!

Come to one of the many social events that this forum organises :) sure there'd be people happy to give you their used tickets. I would.

The newer tickets aren't much use for collecting - the 'printed' info on them fades to invisibility within a couple of years. I just threw out a North East Rover from August 2010 and it was very nearly blank - totally illegible until given a little heat treatment.

I have APTIS tickets from the early 1980s when they first introduced and they are still in "mint" condition. I have many more recent examples of "Star" , "Shere FASTtickets" and "ticket Xpress" over the past few years which are still in perfect condition.

I've kept a few. When I was 11 they built a station at the bottom of my garden (Bristol Parkway). I got a couple of the souvenir opening day platform tickets, sent one off to Peter Purves (as you do) and got a Blue Peter badge :D

He sounds like a lucky man, I just wish my local station was a gated station. :(

Officially yes, but please don't be put off - the only time this would ever be invoked was if there was evidence that you were making use of tickets for fraudulent purposes. This is one of those rules that provide a backstop legal protection for the railway authorities, it is not designed to stop little Johnny keeping his ticket as a souvenir....

Aye, I assumed that even though this technically is against the rules, it's not particularly bad seeing as I'm collecting them simply for my own personal reasons, with no intent to copy/defraud the tickets in any way. :p

Your nearest station that is barriered and has barriers that retain the tickets is Leeds. You could send a letter or e-mail to Northern to see what they do with the used tickets.

I did have a collection of old tickets taken off me at Taunton once, I was told that they were to be disposed of after completion of journey.

I sent Northern an e-mail, asking what is done with the tickets from the barriers at Leeds and they replied telling me that they are disposed of 'for revenue protection reasons'. I e-mailed them back to see if it'd be possible to aquire some of these tickets and they said that they would ask a colleague and get back to me, so I'll have to wait and see. :p

I'll definitely try to attend some of them in the future, but I can't travel too far due to my age so it'd have to be one in my are. :(
