I'm looking at a cycling route for a sponsored Preston-Brighton cycle but I can't actually find a calculator or cycle route with rests and appropriate hotels I can stay at. Could somebody help me devise a route for Preston-Brighton cycling along flat land? I expect it to take a few days and if there's dangerous terrain in some places or massive hills I'm happy to take the bus or train over short distances.

I reckon your best bet would be to sign up and ask HERE

Sounds a rather mammoth trip by bike that mind.

Are you and your bike are used to 300 mile journeys? It doesn't sound like it.
Along with everything you'll need for a week's travelling? And are you intending to travel alone?
It would be irresponsible of anyone on here supporting your suggestion without assurances that you were competent to make that journey safely, especially if you were to travel alone.

If it's for charity you could contact them and arrange for an exercise bike in a public place and do the distance there.

Preston Park - Brighton? Easy. Straight down Dyke Road - can do it in five minutes!

Oh, wait, THAT Preston... No thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try and sign up in the places and will be finding places where I will need to catch the train or bus to avoid massive hills and Birmingham city centre.
Well one can at least try...

If you catch trains to avoid hills then you aren't actually cycling the whole route are you?

As for bikes on buses, with the exception of certain coach-like buses that are not widespread I do not think you will get your bike on many buses. (In fact I'd be interested to hear which bus routes do accept bikes - though that would be for a separate thread in the Other Transport section!)

What long rides have you done so far?

My long ride tomorrow around the Guild Wheel has been postponed if not cancelled due to adverse weather in the Preston area.
When the weather improves I will be taking to the gym to do a mix of running and cycling as well as cycling the 3/4 miles there to clock up as far as I can. As well as that I will attempt the Guild Wheel and start cycling a lot more to build up.
Thanks for the advice, if I don't do Preston-Brighton it'll be London-Shoeburyness which is much better for me.
