I would imagine they are, considering that the Class 317s ran down that way for a number of years and were based on the Mk3 coach, however I'm not 100% sure.

They probably aren't because there's not really been a reason to so there's probably no actual physical reason stopping them being cleared

Im sure they must be as im sure there has been the odd couple of Cotswold Rail Mk3 Buffets / RFMs stored in East Ham Depot over the years? Along with then former Fragonset Blue Pullman Mk2 rake & an 86.

But despite being MK3 based, they are quite different to MK3s.

Not really my patch, but I'm going to gueSs they aren't cleared for the route (at least all the way in to FST) as I cannot see any reason for them to be, unless ofcourse the GEML LHCS servies had ever been diverted that way.

The Mark 3 EMUS (apart from the 442, which is a different beast) have quite a different shape to the coaching stock, being 20m x 2.8m (ish) compared to the coaching stock (and 442s) at 23m x 2.7m. This makes quite a lot of difference to the clearance round curves.

Of course, there's always the possibility that Mark 3s could happily go all the way in without hitting anything, it is just that no-one has ever wanted to take them there, so the work to check the clearance and then the paper work has never been done.

Thank you all for your replies. In summary, based on the postings and other information I've collected, it seems that: -

1. Mk IIIs are not presently included in the vehicles passed to run on the LT & S, according to the Sectional Appendix;

2. Anecdotally, there don't seem to be any pinch points along the route that would cause any issues (I would have thought that platform edges might be a hidden trap);

3. 20 metre long Mk III derivative EMU vehicles run along the route routinely, but this is a red herring as te length and width are different;

4. At some time in the past, an HST might have run down the route (I'd be interested to learn more about when, and if possible see a photo or two).

Thanks again.

Wrong line that's southend vic not central I would be surprised if they have ever run to as the line is short and slow

HSTs have visited the LTS route a couple of times in the late 1970s/early 1980s. The first occasion was a special run from Southend Central to Liverpool Street for the LTS 125 celebrations in 1979(?) when on the return trip the train was specially authorised to exceed the ruling line speed of 75mph and reached over 100mph between Hornchurch and Upminster. On at least one other occasion a set was used on a Merrymaker service from Southend C to York to promote the introduction of HSTs on the ECML.

They are not cleared to operate into Fenchurch Street via Gas Factory Junction and Limehouse due to restricted clearances on the viaducts and/or weak structures approaching the terminus.
