Using a 16-25 railcard with non advance tickets is the £33.75 fare the cheapest option, or is there a valid split on route??

Thanks James

I'm not sure about splits as I am struggling to work out a cheaper combination.

I see that you quoted the Route Via Salisbury fare. I take that to imply that you wish to travel via Southampton. Is that your intention?

Fairwater - Dorchester Stns
Route Via Salisbury
Off-Peak Return Restriction 8A
£30.50 Y-P

allows you to travel via Westbury - Salisbury - Southampton Central - Poole - Dorchester South.

However please note that break of journey is prohibited on the outward portion, so technically you need to have travelled to Dorchester and back to Poole in order to break your journey on the return portion. ;)

If you wish to travel via Yeovil Pen Mill in one direction, then the Change of Route Excess is about 25p, however note that you cannot travel via Yeovil on the return portion, as that would imply that you broke your journey at Poole on the outward portion, which is not permitted. You may travel via Yeovil on the outward portion.

The via Salisbury fare was just the cheapest I Could find :)

Thanks for the Dorchester option, more miles for less ;)

Fairwater - Poole
Route Via Dorchester West
Off-Peak Return Restriction 8A
£31.00 Y-P

is the alternative routeing for the Poole ticket, although there is only a limited number of trains which go that way.

If you can work an itinerary out using the Dorchester ticket then I would stick with that, however if you want to go via Yeovil Pen Mill on the return portion then I will get the Poole ticket and do a Change of Route Excess on the outward portion to Route Via Salisbury to allow you to go via Southampton, which should be about £1.35

Consider the following:

Cardiff Central to Bristol TM @ £7.45 (W1); add 80p for Fairwater
Bristol TM to Dorchester West @ £10.90 (P6)
Dorchester South to Poole @ £6.45 (UQ)

TTL = £24.80; add 80p for Fairwater

This requires a cross-Dorchester connection; NRE recommends 15 minutes. It really isn't very far at all (Google Map).

If that is an issue, an SDR from Fairwater to Bristol TM is £12 with YP (allowing for the £12 minimum); the Bristol to Dorchester ticket can be used from 0700.

Will the £12 minimum fare be in place in July/August?

Yes, good spot, provided that he is happy to go via Yeovil Pen Mill both ways.
