Hi!

Thinking about going to Johnstone tomorrow. If I'm in the mood for a walk and decide to walk to Paisley, will the return section of the ticket be valid? Thanks.

There is no break of journey restriction on any ticket between Glasgow Cen/Qst and Johnstone Sclyde, therefore you're perfectly fine to start/finish short at Paisley Gilmore Street.

I do not think you can use the ticket at Paisley Canal.

In general if you are planning to go from 'a' to 'c' which passes through 'b', I see no problem in boarding at 'b' if you have an 'a' to 'c' ticket.

Indeed if your plans are for a return journey ending at 'a' then getting a Return ticket from 'a' to 'c' seems the ovbvious thing to do. Whether you then decide to actually board at 'a' or 'b' makes little difference.

Having said all this, I'm sure some one will give an example where for a particular TOC or a particular journey that is not allowed. In logic, I have to say that I can't see why.

There are a few tickets where break of journey is not allowed on the out leg, but can't recall many tickets that disallow break of journey on the return one.

There are no such tickets to my knowledge.

Southerns Super off peak returns do not allow break of journey on either leg outside of the London Travelcard area.

This was news to me.

I checked on Southern's site and this is what it said for a Super Off Peak Day Return to Victoria:

Other than to change trains, a break of journey at intermediate London Underground or DLR stations is NOT permitted.

Nothing else about break of journey not being permitted.

I looked at the Southern (only) Super Off Peak Day Return, the absolute lowest fare to London Victoria (see attachment). The Southern website does not (to my knowledge) show restriction codes.

The terms and conditions for this fare are these (extract):

Super Off Peak Day Return

Ticket Description:
Super Off-Peak fares are cheaper tickets for travelling on trains that are less busy. You may be required to travel at specific times of day, days of the week or on a specific route.

Break of journey:
A break of journey is allowed on Super-Off Peak Day tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's Restriction Code.

Validity:
... Super Off-Peak Day tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 0429 on the following day, by which time all travel must be completed. Time restrictions are indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's Restriction Code. Travelling via London. If the route shown on the ticket has a + the ticket includes the cost of travelling between certain London Stations (e.g. between Liverpool St and Paddington) by either London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) or First Capital Connect (Thameslink Route) services appropriate to the route of the journey being made. Tickets will only be accepted by London Underground and DLR on the date shown on the ticket and until 0429 the following day. Other than to change trains, a break of journey at intermediate London Underground or DLR stations is NOT permitted. Travel restrictions do not apply on public holidays.

Train operator:
Southern Railways

So, considering that the Southern website offers no other information concerning restrictions (no codes are mentioned) it's clear that break of journey is permitted on this, the lowest of all fares.

I'm going by this page on the Southern Website: http://www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/ticket-types/super-off-peak-tickets/
I very rarely use these tickets these days
