The Hayes line in South London currently takes up 4 paths an hour Monday-Saturday from the Lewisham area into London Bridge and Cannon St / Charing Cross (2 each) thereafter. I seem to recall this was the reason given a while ago for the proposals to convert it to LUL Bakerloo line operation, or even DLR from Lewisham. I'm certain the former was a serious idea, but does anyone know what has happened to these ideas, and any other reasons cited (I assume releasing some 376s and 46xs?).

Cheers

Edit - Tramlink conversion could have been mentioned and not DLR, sorry I'm not to sure (hence I'm asking! ;)).

Bakerloo was floated in the London and South East RUS as a more realistic option than the DLR (something about a road in the way), and the idea is basically just to release paths.

Currently there's no public money being offered for LU extensions I believe (Boris isn't that into new rail projects anyway it seems) so nothing will happen to the suggestions in the near future.

It'd be incredibly useful, but I expect commuters from the Hayes line would kick up a fuss about being diverted out of Cannon Street. It depends on how much they can be convinced the increase in frequency would be a good thing I suspect.

A Bakerloo conversion has been a serious proposal for a while. It was mentioned in a previous Kent RUS (link), for instance. I don't think it would work in any other form though, so tram or DLR conversion seems highly unlikely.

The question has to be how many trains an hour would run through to Hayes if the line was converted.

Maybe Boris would find some money if you suggested converting it into a cycle way ?!

I think it would have to be a cable car.
