Depends which DVTs you are talking about, some have been fitted with AAR for working with 67s.

As HHF points out some have been fitted with AAR but in general terms yes the only locos that DVTs can work with are those fitted with TDM (or AAR). However, this of course, only applies to driving a locomotive from a DVT. It's perfectly possible to have a DVT being hauled in a formation even if the loco doesn't have TDM or AAR.

the ones that Wrexham & Shropshire (and now Chiltern) use, numbered 823xx, are fitted for working with class 67s, I believe.
Indeed, the 823xx series DVTs, both the Chiltern and the new ATW examples, are the only DVTs fitted with the AAR multiple working system for working in push-pull mode with 67s as stated above. Time-division multiplex system is the order of the day for the mark 3 82/1 and mark 4 82/2 DVTs.

I gather that the AAR modified ones still retain TDM equipment allowing them backwards compatibility.

Same with DBSO's - originally only with 47/7's (which I believe wasn't actually true TDM, but a more limited version), then full TDM, and the ones left with NR were completely modified for Blue Star.

There's one that DBS have as well (in fact, that was the first) used on the "management train" and also for RHTT!

Presumably the 823xx ones would also be compatible with Class 59 and 66- and maybe 70? Obviously for passenger services those classes lack ETS.

Well the 823xx DVTs also have ETS generators (do all of them have them?), so they could potentially be hauled by anything with a set of AAR jumpers.

Some Chiltern DVTs have train heating generators for keeping ECS warm - but could presumably also be used while moving to allow use of a non-heating locomotive

The 67+DVT combinations used for leaf blowing – are those separate to Chiltern's?

Yeah, DB's 82146 is technically an 82/3, despite not being numbered as such as it is AAR fitted. I'm sure I have read somewhere they could theoretically work with 66s.

Chiltern's 82301-82305 are fitted with ETS generators, but ATW's 82306-82308 and DB's 82146 are not fitted with generators, like normal 82/1 amd 82/2 DVTs.

Yeah, they are operated by DB with 67029 and 82146 on behalf on Network Rail,

Surely it would have been a good idea if the ATW DVTs had been done to the exact same spec as the Chiltern ones- and the carriages, for that matter, too? Could even have gone for the same livery with ATW coloured vinyl stripes in place of the Chiltern ones...

It would have provided alot more flexibility for DB, but WAG are paying for ATW's coaches and DVTs and not for Chiltern's (obviosuly :P) so they are having different things done to them. Chiltern's DVTs are having generators and power door controls fitted, whereas ATW's aren't. Chiltern's mark 3s are having power doors fitted but still retain IC70 seats, whereas ATW's mark 3 aren't getting power doors but are getting new Grammer seats. And as for the livery thing, WAG/ATW both probably want their premier train in their own livery. ;)
