I want to travel from Lancaster to Newcastle via Barrow-in-Furness (or at least along the Furness / Cumbrian Coast lines, but I believe I will have to alight at Barrow anyway).

I've never ventured north of Coventry before so know very little about trains up there.

Is it possible to do this on one ticket? Are advance tickets useful on this route? I have a 16-25 railcard.

Thanks.

There is no Advance fare available for Lancaster - Newcastle.

Fares are available from here.

You are permitted to travel via the Cumbrian Coast Line.

I don't know when you are travelling, but there is a (weekday) 1534 from Lancaster (two 153s when I went on it) which is direct to Carlisle (via the coast) and has a 30 minute connection for the Newcastle train (a 156 when I was on it), arrival time in Newcastle is 2111hrs.

Thanks. Will check whether that train is suitable.

Given that this takes 3 hours longer than the Virgin/TPE services to Carlisle, would the Northern guards question my choice of route?

I assume I'm allowed to break journey at Barrow and Carlisle? Are there ticket barriers at those stations?

You won't have any problem with the Northern guards.
You may always break your journey as many times as you want on an Anytime Single/Return within the validity of the ticket.

You will probably have to change trains anyway, so there is no real issue unless you have an Advance ticket
This ticket would work in the same way as a Glasgow - Newcastle single, you may have to change trains at Carlisle and the ticket examiners will not normally ask what service you were using the rest of the day

Guards might warn/inform you that it takes longer (especially if they hear a southern accent!), but they'll accept the ticket.

Bear in mind that the trains will not have catering and will likely be a Pacer or Sprinter with one toilet on them. They're also not the most comfortable.

In other words - Lancaster-Carlisle is a great line, but I'd never ride it all the way in one go myself. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it's a 4 hour trip in a very small space with no facilities.

The obvious place to break the trip on the Cumbria Coast would be Barrow-in-Furness, as there's a bit of a cafe and other facilities at the station, and you may have to change there anyway.

If you're getting a train that runs right through from Lancaster but wanting to break for Ravenglass is much more picturesque place to stop, and is roughly half way through the journey. It's a little village on the coast in the Lakes, and you might be interested in having a look at or a short ride on the 'Ratty' railway line there as well.

This thread has more info about it!

Oh, and I'll sent you a PM about a split ticket on that route :)

The through train from Lancaster to Carlisle should be advertised as Barrow on the front of the train, although I'm not sure if the customer information screens at Lancaster will do this (although they should do to stop confusion).

There are two morning trains from Preston to Carlisle via the Coast (0522 and 0838 from Preston) each one taking 4 hours. They are simply shown as "Carlisle" on the screens at Preston. This is confusing for Carlisle passengers who may inadvertently end up on a rather lengthy tour if the Guard doesn't come round before Lancaster and they don't listen / look at screens, and similarly confusing for Barrow passengers who may not be expecting it to show Carlisle.

Exactly, the same situation as York - Leeds via Harrogate. I've used one train before from Lancaster to Carlisle via Barrow, and I'm sure the front of the train had Barrow on the front, which might make some people check first, although if people have no local knowledge they could assume that Barrow is a station on the fast route to Carlisle.

When I took the 1534 from Lancaster to Carlisle the departure boards had "Carlisle via Cumbrian coast" displayed and most of the staff were quite eager to point this fact out and advise passengers for Carlisle not to board it.
