A friend sent me a pic of the paper boarding pass, it appears they use the same ticketing system as was used by TfL Ticket Agents when they sold paper passes.

10 journeys in 12 months: £16
Private cabin hire: £86

So it looks as though £3.20 in each direction is the best available which does seem a little expensive to me (especially when Boris said it was £1.60 a ticket. He must have been talking about a Child discounted single...).

Or maybe 1/10th of the multi journey ticket?

He is clearly talking about that and not child fares.

It takes around 10 minutes off-peak, so compared to the London Eye (which is 30 minutes for £18.90+, depending on how long you want to queue), I think the cable car compares favourably at £9.60 for 30 minutes.

The sponsorship from Emirates Airline hasn't covered the entire costs, so the shortfall must be made up somehow. I never expected it to be included in Travelcards and Oyster caps, although the very fast opening was certainly unexpected!

And when public money is no object.

Hmm, there has been some rather ripe reporting going on about this. Loads of headline '£60 million cost to build) yet all the press from both local and national are now saying it cost £45 million to build. So with £36 million from Emirates and £8 million from the European fund or somethign then it hasnt cost the public purse much at all.

If the figures are to be believed.

I'd like to know where you are getting that £45 million figure from. The costs have been consistently reported as £60m, with a £36m contribution from Emirates. The £8m from Brussels was always in question, and seems to be have been confirmed by Johnson only yesterday, obviously to give the project some good PR on its opening day.

Dead easy - it's North Greenwich (for the O2) on the Jubilee line :)

I love the way people are saying how it's such an expensive option compared with the Undertube, and how it's such poor value compared with an All Zones 5 day Oyster Card or whatever, and it can only carry 47% of the number of people per hour as the Coronation Line; none of that is the point, is it. It's a novelty for the Tourists. It's like the Routemaster heritage routes, or the sightseeing boats.

It wasn't marketed by Barmy Boris as "a novelty for the Tourists" but as an integral part of London's public transport system. If it is indeed a tourist thing why has my council tax been used to build the damn thing, it should have been completely private sector. Doubtless when it completely fails to make revenue targets (probably in FY 13/14) Boris will tap the London council taxpayer to fund another of his vanity (I bet his missus never gets near a mirror!) projects (like his damn stupid ugly bus - new Routemaster my rear end!) some more. The only practical one has been the bikes and that was Ken's idea!!!

Took a trip, sorry, "flight" earlier today. Massive queues for tickets at both termini - people didn't seem to realise you could just touch your Oyster on the gates and go straight through.

In the air the wind was quite noisy, and my gondola juddered to a halt a couple of times (due to wheelchairs boarding at the termini) which was an experience! Views of the Dome, Olympic Park and Canary Wharf were good, counterbalanced by the relative tattiness and dullness of Silvertown and other bits of East London.

The moquette on the seats was a nice touch too :)

To be fair to it all at least it connects places - anyone who has been to Barcalona will notice their port one doesnt really do just that and is in fact much much more expensive than this one here.

I suppose most people who will use it at first will just be people who are curious to see what it is and what it's like, it's quite expensive to use as regular transport but as a tourist gimmick it's fairly cheap compared to other tourist attractions.

I've just watched a video of somebody's trip on the cable car, had to laugh at the announcement as it sets off; "Welcome to the Emirates Air Line, we will be reaching a cruising altitude of up to 295 feet". What a joke.

Can you link the video for me please? I am interested to watch it myself.

Cheers, TP.

According to a leaflet we got through our doors (presumably because we live fairly near the cablecar) you can get tickets for 10 journeys which works out at £1.60/journey - which is a fair bit cheaper than the oyster fare.

(Edit. Looks like TheJRB has already pointed out the lower fair for 10 journeys earlier in the thread)

Why does it matter if you're flying under engine power or hanging on a cable? Even if you only 'cruise' at 295 feet for a short distance before descending, it's still accurate - and also a bit of fun!

You're dangling from a cable above the Thames, not flying.

Yes, well done but that can still be construed as flying could it not?

Also given that they are being sponsored by an 'Airline' then it is rather clever.

Now what we really could do is a cable car system that goes from say Victoria to Bank via Oxford St, but is only say 60ft high, follows street contours but has no traffic to worry about like buses. It would have a station frequency between that of the buses and that of the tube... like the DLR? that really would be cool!

But that is fantasy land!... cheaper than light rail mind you

Why does 'cruising at an altitude of' have to mean you're flying without wires? I can cruise along in my car, but I'm not flying either. Or on a boat. And I could state I was cruising at nn feet and still be on the ground or on water.

I think there's a sense of humour failure here somewhere.
