Hi,

I've been looking into how to split the season ticket in this forum, and I've found some good informations, but it's not for sure yet, especially ticket officers didn't articulate if it was right or wrong.

I commute from Ealing Broadway to Guildford;
Ealing Broadway -> Shepherd Bush -> Clapham Junction -> Guildford

I bought a Zone 2-3 Oyster pass and a season ticket from Clapham Junction to Guildford, which cost £340.70 a month.

However, from Clapham Junction to Wimbledon is still in Zone 3, so I may be able to buy a season ticket from Wimbledon to Guildford, which cost £324.5 a month.

A train that I take at Clapham Junction doesn't call at Wimbledon, but my case seems to be applied to the condition 19-C in the NRCoC, because one of my tickets is the season ticket, and the other is the zonal ticket.

Actually, I would like to buy a Zone 2-4 Oyster pass and season ticket from New Malden to Guildford, which cost £318.00 a month.

I was offered to a ticket Guildford - London Zone 2-6, which costs £323.80, but I would like to use Oyster in Central London.

I appreciate any opinion.

Thank you,

Thank you,

A Zone 2-3 Oyster season and a Guildford - Wimbledon season do not qualify for either (a) or (c) in Condition 19. Only one is zonal, and both or seasons.

What you should buy is a Guildford - London Zones 4-6 travelcard, which costs £255 per month. This coupled with a Zones 2-3 Oyster season is perfectly valid for a non-stop journey to Zone 2 on a permitted route, and for any travel within the zones avoiding Zone 1. Adding on your Zones 2-3 season gives £339.50/month.

No, the train needs to call, unless they are both Zonal (not the case; only one is) or one is a season and the other(s) is/are not, (but that's not the case either as both are Season tickets).

A Travelcard Season is both a Zonal ticket and also a Season ticket, and therefore it can be used with either a non-season, or another Zonal ticket for non-stop travel. If you combine it with another Season that isn't Zonal, the train does need to call.

Thank you for your replys, calc7 and yorkie!

It seems I cannot save up money as I thought (T _ T;

Is there any website to calculate a cost of the Guildford - London Zone travelcard?
I would like to know how much it is if I buy a travelcard Guildford - London Zone 5-6.

Many thanks,

Note that while the Guildford to zones 4-6 paper ticket plus zones 2-3 oyster will cover you for all travel within zones 2-6, if you want to travel in to zone 1 on your oyster card then you must touch in somewhere within zone 2 or 3. When you're travelling entirely within your zones on Oyster it'll let you touch out without having touched in and vice versa and not charge you extra, but if you want to start within your zones and travel to somewhere outside then you must have a touch in to match the touch out.

In particular if you try and take a train all the way from Guildford to Waterloo and just use your oyster to exit the barrier at Waterloo then you'll be charged a maximum fare that doesn't count towards the PAYG cap.

MikeW's excellent site has the full gory details.

Thank you button boxer,

Yes, I know it.
I rarely go outside of Zone 3 other than work, so Zone 1 is the only case for me to consider.

I am not sure but I feel the travelcard extension fares are more expensive than using Oyster (pay as you go), so I want to use Oyster in central London, and I will touch in/out Oyster.

Now, what I would like to do is to compare prices:
A. Oyster Zone 2-3 + Guildford to Zone 4-6
B. Oyster Zone 2-4 + Guildford to Zone 5-6
C. Oyster Zone 2-5 + Guildford to Zone 6

Many thanks,

A. Oyster Zone 2-3 + Guildford to Zone 4-6 = £84.50 + £255 = £339.50
B. Oyster Zone 2-4 + Guildford to Zone 5-6 = £93 + £248.50 = £341.50
C. Oyster Zone 2-5 + Guildford to Zone 6 - no season ticket for the latter

You can get outboundary travelcard season prices from the season ticket calculator on nationalrail.co.uk, just ask for an origin of Guildford and a destination of some appropriate station within the zone you're interested in (e.g. Surbiton for zone 6, Raynes Park for zone 4, etc.). It'll give you the point to point prices at the top and the travelcard ones below.

To complete the picture
Guildford - Zone 2-6 £323.80
Guildford - Zone 1-6 £366.00

So the cheapest way is not to split at all but buy the Guildford - Zone 2-6 season for £323.80

And fortunately on that line you won't over pay to get into zone 1. You just need to switch trains at Vauxhall which is dual zoned and has trains every few minutes, or even switch to the tube there.

Thank you so much everyone,

I will probably go for Oyster Zone 2-3 + Guildford to Zone 4-6, which will save up £1.20 a month, lol... I should find a job in central London; that's the best solution.

What trains from Ealing Broadway to central London go via Vauxhall ;)

Or potentially look at renting/buying property in Guildford?

Trains from Guildford do though, so travelling into central London after work would be fine.

From Ealing, one would need to disembark to touch in at either Notting Hill Gate (Central) or Earl's Court (District/Piccadilly). By train it's a bit more tricky and I think the best answer would be a ticket from Acton Main Line - London Paddington (£6.40/£3.70 Anytime return/single) would be the best bet. This would be valid on trains which don't stop at Acton Main Line in conjunction with your Season. Fortunately however Ealing is much better connected by Tube than by train (for now at least!), so it shouldn't be too much of a drag that the train works out more expensive.

Everyone has excellent knowledge!

Actually, I get off a tube at Notting Hill Gate and take a bus when I go to central London, because of my oyster pass. And when I go to central London after working, I get off a train at Vauxhall and take a bus, so I don't pay any extra cost.

Renting a property in Guildford is being under consideration, but it's unlikely... though Guildford is a good town.

This would be covered by a paper Zone 2-6 to Guildford ticket too, you'd only have to pay for rail and Underground services (using Oyster).

Yes, that's right.

However, I sometimes use Tube in Zone 1 when I have no time to get in time or when I am with my friends. So Oyster is convenient for me to change a route in a second.

I hope the train company will introduce Oyster as well.

That's unlikely to happen for a long time, as the DfT have specified a different spec for the smartcards for the railways, which is not compatible with Oyster.

You could always have a separate PAYG Oyster card for spontaneous zone 1 rail/Underground journeys - but of course you'd have to hop out and touch out when entering zone 2...

Hi all, I have one more question.

I have bought the ticket yesterday, and I looked at it closely, there is "Route/also available at" on the ticket.

Is it important?
In my case, it is via Surbiton, but I am not sure if it is correct for my case.

Many thanks,

There is no Route Any Permitted season ticket for Guildford - London Zones 4-6.

There are three different routings available: Route Via Epsom, Route Via Surbiton and Route Via Virginia Water, all priced at the same level.

If your ticket says Route Via Surbiton then obviously you must travel on a route that passes through Surbiton.
