BRITISH comedy is in mourning today following the death of Goon Show writer Eric Sykes, who has died aged 89.

The writer and comic actor became a household name in the 60s and 70s with his show, Sykes And A..., with Hattie Jacques.

He penned numerous episodes of the Goon Show with creator Spike Milligan and scripts for stars such as Peter Sellers, Frankie Howerd and Stanley Unwin.

One of the most endearing and popular comic actors of his generation, Sykes was still appearing on the West End stage into his 80s, even though he became almost totally deaf and nearly blind.

He was hailed as a comedy scriptwriter of enormous talent, energy and imagination - as well as a novelist, film director and producer.

Whenever asked when he was going to retire, he replied he enjoyed doing his job so much that he did not regard it as work at all.

His manager, Norma Farnes, said: “Eric Sykes, 89, star of TV, stage and films died peacefully this morning after a short illness.

“His family were with him.”

He didn't have to rely on smut like the majority of present day comedians, very sad he's gone but as they say "'he 'ad a good innings"

I'm surprised he was only 89, he seemed to have been around for ages. Great in 'Monty Carlo or Bust' and 'Those Magnificent Men in their flying machines' with Terry-Thomas

Geordie back from exile.
Brilliant actor the likes of which will never be seen again in my opinion.

The Plank. I need say no more.

RIP Eric, thanks for all the laughs.
