As was remarked, they were taking adequate precautions for when - I mean if it failed, with three proper locos in attendance.<:D

A pity they didn't take the opportunity to have it piloting the 13:00 and 15:15 departures from Loughborough on a weekend. It could have been quite a moneyspinner for the GCR.

Few reputable establishments (other than the Fire Brigades various whose reputations are impeccable) have more experience of trains with fires in them

Good thinking, but can they actually be coupled to a Mk1 or any sort of coach with they way the 70s buffers are recessed?

Plus that they're air brake only, of course.
I think (so they said one time, i think) they can't be coupled to coaching stock directly for some reason or other, that's why when they're used on charters a 66 needs to be coupled inside.
Plus that they've got a backup on hand, of course.

The operative word in my previous post being "piloting". There would need to be a dual braked loco between the 70 and the coaching stock.

pretty easy I would have thought, I think the GCR has at least 3 dual braked engines which are resident there.

This particular 70 has had technical mods and Freightliner would have had to provide a driver etc for it - it was never on the cards for it to haul passenger trains as it might not have even stayed over the weekend.
