Not sure if this has been talked about but there is a new free £10 Evoucher from Red spotted hanky and the Sun.

The website address is

www.redspottedhanky.com/thesun

and the good thing is if you have a account you can claim the voucher as well.

Hmmm.
I can't see a "Sun Voucher Offer box" anywhere in my account bit.
Presumably they have given out enough vouchers and have now stopped it?

Yes. They were probably processing the remaining e-vouchers when the website was down last night. Don't worry, though - I'm sure the offer will be back again soon!

Is this the place to mention Scotrail Club55? It's not just an online offer? (MODs, please move if better elsewhere)

I'm in Thurso at the moment, and (for reasons known to readers of another post of mine) have just bought a Club55 from here to Carlisle.

I was going to get 1st class this time (having belatedly realised that an extra 3 quid 50 each way was good value for free scoff)....

BUT the nice lady at the station (and she was very helpful and efficient) said that the "computer says no" to buying a Club55 Premier from Thurso. The reason seems to be that there is no first class from Thurso to Inverness.

The leaflet says something like "Premier is available on all trains with first class". But this was surely put in as a plus point for would be buyers, not as an instruction to the programmers to bar selling Premier on a route where just one leg doesn't have first class. I was willing to pay the extra 7 quid to get first class on just the Inverness-Carlisle legs but it's not possible.

Yes, because these are the only services with First Class. (Well almost, because the out-of-Scotland services to Berwick and Carlisle also do - so the "Premier available on all services with first class" statement in the leaflet is false).

I'm now between Thurso and Inverness in the declassified First Class! At least I can keep my phone charged, even if no free coffee (if that's what they call this dishwasher!).

EMT £10. Thanks, signed up.

Explicitly says one voucher per person, unfortunately, so I won't be using multiple email addresses. I may ask a friend to get a voucher and buy a return ticket for me (NOT transfer his ticket to me, before anyone tells me that's not allowed!).

For most people, who do straightforward return journeys, this will only be in effect a fiver off each way per person. AND for some reason it's "One voucher per transaction". So a couple travelling together who each have their own voucher will have to buy tickets separately. (Sigh....)

I always get the impression with these offers that someone in Marketing comes up with a way of bringing in revenue at a slack time, but then the bean counters and the "you can't let people get away with x" types pitch in. It then ends up watered down and hedged round with so many petty restrictions that takeup falls. Sometimes it just seems like a way of getting a headline or two.

Typical, I book a free journey with EMT, find the date I have booked for I can't do anymore - go to book another to find the offer has expired! Ooops :(

Press release here: SIGN UP WITH EAST COAST AND BAG A SUMMER BARGAIN

Exclusive money-saving travel deal available only through operator’s website

Never mind the rain, save money by train – that’s the message from East Coast as it urges bargain hunters to sign up now for a great summer travel deal.

The train operator is offering a full 25% off its cheapest First and Standard Advance fares to customers signed up via a special page on its website: www.eastcoast.co.uk/25.

Cost-conscious travellers will need to be quick to benefit from the super deal, as tickets go on sale from this Friday 29 June 2012 until midnight on Monday 2 July 2012.

Tickets can be bought at the offer price for travel between Monday 23 July 2012 and Thursday 23 August 2012, to and from all destinations served directly by East Coast trains.

Not valid with Railcards. Spoils the offer for a good third of travellers.

I'd say it's worse than that. Part of the blurb says:
East Coast Commercial and Customer Service Director Peter Williams said: “This excellent value offer is a great opportunity for families to benefit from bargain low fares - ideally timed for the school summer holidays.

“East Coast trains run direct to many attractive holiday destinations. Families can wave goodbye to the stress of motorway driving and travel in style to enjoy exciting city breaks in London, York or Edinburgh, for example.

Yet most families who are prepared to travel by train will have the family and friends railcard which will give much better discounts. The cynic in me thinks this might be a scam to minimise the effect of that railcard on unsuspecting travellers.

Also, the "First Class" offer is shockingly stingy, so never mind.

The hype drives you mad. Virgin do hype as well but at least what they say isn't blatantly false! As you say, families would be much better off with an F&F Railcard as it gives a 34% discount on adult tickets and an 81% discount on child tickets.

So, First Great Western just sent me an e-mail with '10% off my first online booking of advance tickets'.

As useful as this may be a) How have they got my e-mail adress in thhe first place? - They've obviously got is because we've booked tickets through them before, and b) I take it that you can't use a railcard with it.

Anyone else got the same?

Yes I've got one too but it's come to my alternative e mail address which I last used on a rail-related deal to get a second lot of free First Capital Connect tickets last year. Possibly linked to that promotion ?

There are some good deals on the railbookers site http://www.railbookers.com/ I booked a holiday with them for August, you have to call up but the lady gave me 10% off which made the 4* holiday to Brussels and Bruges pretty affordable considering!
