Chieftain Crew Resting Period Question

How long do the Newcastle Crew that work The Highland Chieftain have to "rest" between shifts Inverness?

I heard that it is 9 Hours?

I *believe* that the NB Highland Cheftian and the SB aren't worked by the same crew? I remember hearing the NB crew will work a SB Aberdeen service the next day?

I don't think that is correct, if the Cheftian is late up then it is normally late the following day. The most recent example was following when it was caught up in the flooding at Prestonpans, it left Inverness the following day at 0915.

We will find out tomorrow, but I would be surprised if it leaves at 0755.

I've read various times before on this forum that the Northbound driver takes a break at one of the stops between Perth and Inverness. Which station is it? Opentraintimes shows only the normal few minute stops at each station. Only on a sunday it stops at Kingussie for 12 minutes, but thats for a Southbound Scotrail service to pass.

The north bound Newcastle drivers on the 1200-KX-INVERNESS, and the 0710 LDS-ABERDEEN swap places and the the 0710 driver takes the Inverness back in the morning and the the Northbound Inverness driver takes the 1450 Aberdeen service back to Newcastle both after lodging in Inverness overnight. The guard on the northbound cheftain also takes it back in the morning and that i am told is a minumum of 10 hours (used to be 9) which may explain the delay on a morning failed unit states.
The fact the driver takes the train out to be re-fueled on an evening is the reason why he/she cant take it back in the morning as although it may be in the 10 hour rest period it is a bit too close and any delay means it would leave late too often. Ive had all this first hand off the drivers in this link, hope it helps.

I know a driver needs to prep the train, but does the gaurd need to do any prep as well?

My other question is are any of the crew from Inverness, ie the Catering crew, not ever noticed any Geordie accents from them ;)

The catering crew are Inverness-based and get a couple of hours at Newcastle to make the swap onto the northbound. And a very fine body of people they are too - the best!

This was a localised issue and it was decided last week not to swap crews, but instead to keep the crews where they were and operate the following days southbound services later than normal

As above, normal process is for the driver to stay overnight where they arrived, travel pass between Inverness and Aberdeen, then take the mid-afternoon service southbound, with the other driver taking the next Aberdeen - Inverness service and staying overnight in Inverness
The other members of the train crew stay with their respective train

I would imagine that the Guard has to carry out the internal prep of all relevant passenger areas, as well as perhaps assisting the Driver with a brake test. Just guessing though!

I think the Depot might do that - they do at Clayhills
