Pubs In Brussels/Bruges

I'm going to Brussels on Eurostar on the 27th for a couple of days returning Sunday evening with a trip to Bruges on the Saturday, So If anyone can reconmend any pubs or beer I must go to or try during my time there and anything I must see or do during my short time in either place, that would be great. I'm staying in a hotel near the Schuman Metro station and will have a travelcard for the weekend (13 euros bargain) so will be able to get around easily.

Any of them! Seriously, beer is the national drink of Belgium and I have yet to have one that disappoints.

Where do you start? If you've not done so, do some research on the beers and bars (from books or online) before you go - - the diversity is (as I'm sure you know) immense, and the quality varies too - while there are quite a range of styles...which have little in common with the kind of beers readily available in the UK.

For what it's worth my favourites include

Rodenbach Grand Cru - a sour red (very refreshing on a summer afternoon, quite sharp, maybe a bit of an acquired taste)

St. Bernardus Abt 12 - which is a lovely, strong, dark, trappist-style (though no longer actually made my monks) beer (and based upon the same recipe as the beer regarded as being like gold-dust by some affectionados of Belgian beer, the Westvleteren 12 - although if you do manage to find a place selling that, I've found it can be a bit temperamental and needs to mature...). the Bernardus is far more reliable.

La Chouffe - refreshing and blonde

In Bruges, the two main beer bars with big menus are "Brugs Beertje" http://www.brugsbeertje.be/ and (also in the centre of town, but hidden away down an alley) "De Garre" http://beersay.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/de-garre-bruges/

I think Beertje is a little better, generally (and also slightly larger). There's another one, "Cambrinus", which has a decent beer selection but which, as a bar, really lacks character and is far too aimed at (English-speaking) tourists.

In Brussels, Bier Circus is a favourite, and fairly central http://www.bier-circus.be/
While there are two branches of Moeder Lambic http://www.moederlambic.com/bars/ one central one less so. Have only been to the further-out one, but it didn't disappoint.
I think there are many more options though....and I don't know Brussels so well

I can also recommend a (self-guided) tour around the (small and traditional) Cantillon Brewery in the inner suburbs of Brussels http://www.cantillon.be/br/3_2 . You also get to sample some of the very fine Gueuze beers that they brew there included in the admission price

Avoid Jupiler and Maes - mass produced lagers than make Stella seem like champagne in comparison....

If you like Jacques Brel at all, there's a pretty interesting museum dedicated to him in Brussels - small but makes the most of the limited space...

Comptoir des Arts, 53 Vlamingstraat. Open from 18:00, A nice cellar bar with a growing beer list of around 60 -80 beers.

De Garre, 1 De Garre. Open from 11:00 Saturdays, 12:00 others. Not as good as it used to be but still good with a list of around 120 beers. Handy to pop into for a couple at lunch time!

The must do in Brugge is 't Brugse Beertje, I arrive in Brugge on 27th for a week and will be in 't Brugse Beertje from opening time on 27th and 28th.

Be warned Belgian bars do close completely for their summer holidays, with just a note on the door! I don't know when De Garre is closed but 't Brugse Beertje is closed early July, I know it's open from the 27th as we arranged with Daisy the owner so that we would be there when they were open.

Brugge is a nice place for a wander around with plenty of cafes to stop at for a coffee and bite to eat. It may be worth getting your ticket from Brussels to Brugge before you go from the SNCB web site, saves the long queues ay the station.

I will post some Brussels bars later, but both Moeder Lambics are worth a visit, I prefer the older one.

Here are some bars for Brussels:

Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas. 8 Place Fontainas, not far from too Brussels Zuid station so handy for a few beers before getting the Eurostar home! Large beer selection something like 40 taps.

Chez Meoder Lambic St-Gilles. 68 Rue de Savoie. My favourite bar in Brussels, a bit further out, worth getting a tram or taxi to/from. Good selection of beers and lots of cheeses!

Delirium Cafe. 4a Impasse de la Fidelite. Very large selection of bottles, service can sometimes be difficult because the place does get wedged at times.

As well as the usual tourist stuff the Belgian military history museum is worth a visit, it's free and has a good collection of aircraft and armoured vehicles if your interested, it's also close to where you are staying. http://www.klm-mra.be/klm-new/engels/main01.php?id=menu_links/startpagina

As I said in my previous post I will be in Bruges on 28th July in 't Brugse Beertje from opening time, so I may even see you there, it is the don't miss bar in Bruges. I'll be sat at the bar with my wife, just ask the staff for Clive, but be warned you need to get there for opening time, 16:00, as it can quickly fill up.

In Brugge, I'd also recommend 't Poatersgat, under a church on Vlamingstraat.

In Brussels, my usual first port of call for a snack and a few beers is A La Morte Subite- it has quite an interesting interior.
If you want a decent meal in the evening, with everything cooked with beer, Restobieres is superb- thought gets very cramped, and booking is recommended.
For something a little different food-wise, De Kuiper in Vilvoorde (10 mins from the station, which is about 10 mins from Brussels) specialises in horse meat. Usually go there for one meal on each visit. Beer range is not enormous, but they have a few of the trappist beers, probably Rochefort (Rochefort 10 is my favourite trappist).

Enjoy it- I was there about a month ago, and won't be able to get back until November or December.

Yes 't Poatersgat is worth a visit, it is directly across the road from Comptoir des Arts in Vlammingstraat, although it has become one of the bars of choice for local students so can get quite noisy especially at weekends, Another newish place worth visiting during the day for a quiet drink is Café Rose Red at 16 Cordoeaniersstraat which opens at 10am so is handy for a quiet beer or two during the day if you've been walking around a lot.
