Guy Getting Hit by Train at Dumbarton East Station Today

Hi! Just spotted that somebody has been hit by a train at Dumbarton East today.

I was at that particular station today. Just wondering if he or she is ok? Thanks!

Hate to say it but in these situations the outcome is usually not good.

Person was struck by the 1425(2H78) helensburgh central to edinburgh waverley service.

Person was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance

I doubt it. I'm no expert on the physical effects on the human body resulting from impact by a train, but I'd make an educated guess that he/she is (or indeed was) in a pretty bad way!

Elementary physics says that a "thousand*" ton train hitting a 200 pound human is going to impart a lot of force to said human, while said human is not going to slow down the train by any measurable amount...

* Rough global estimate, will depend on rolling stock, number of carriages, whether full or empty, etc. Could be anywhere from 150-2000 I reckon, but someone may be able to make a more accurate estimate of the particular train. Principle doesn't change however.

It is mentioned in today's daily record, it says the man suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by a train, & was airlifted to hospital.

Obviously I don't know the circumstances that caused this to happen, but I do hope the man makes a good recovery.

The same goes for the driver, staff, passenger's on the train.

Not a nice thing at all.

Oddly you omit reference to the SPEED of the train, which is by far the most important factor when considering the effects. A 1000 ton train travelling at 1 mph might well do no damage if it hit a standing person.

I omitted it simply because at any speed the train was likely to be travelling it's still going to do more than enough damage. At 1mph it would depend on how the person fell...

The injuries would also be determined by the place in the track a person is. If they where between the running rails they may just be OK but with parts over running rails it may be a different story.

That sounds accurate. I was caught a glancing blow by a departing HST at Reading once. Knocked the wind out of me, but I landed back on the platform and was all right (if a little shaken) within a few minutes. It was about the same as falling out of a tree and landing flat on my back.

Agreed, it is momentum, but a person would have to be going very fast to impact the train's momentum, whereas the train does not have to be going very fast to affect a person...

I think what HH is trying to say is with such a large mass, the momentum of the train at any speed will be enough to do serious damage.
