Does anybody know what electrification has been done or haven't they started.

Also does anybody know what sort of timing the project will run on. (to avoid major infrastructural improvements like reading.)

I not of how much works has been started yet apart from the bridge works on the Reading - Newbury section, but electrification masts are currently being put up at the new reading depot.

Most work so far is in the drawing offices and on surveys. The High Output plant contract was awrded a while ago.

No wires are up yet. They are altering bridges, for instance on the B&H east of Newbury.

Masts are already up as part of the new depot building project west of Reading station.

Reading station rebuild will include all the masts and portals for the OHLE. Concrete foundations for masts in the station area are going in now as advance works - just west of P10 for instance. They are not avoiding the Reading rebuild - it seems they are piggy backing on the existing work.

Latest key dates are that main construction begins Oct 2013

Construction complete and infrastructure available Sept 2016

Electric services to begin to Bristol, Newbury and Oxford Dec 2016

Cardiff is later, but not by much - maybe a year or so.

OK Thank you I was just a bit confused with the timing of the project and what is going on when.

Network Rail started hiring overhead line apprentices for South Wales, earlier this year I believe.

I'm assuming it is gantries in the station at Reading or are they going for more headspans?

Unless someone's working on the project I doubt we'll find out quickly. The vertical masts are common to portals and headspans aren't they?

Another option within the station platform area would be double cantilevers centred between each pair of tracks - that way there's no conflicts between the platform canopies and the electrification. Then they could change to cantilevers at the east and west throats over the S&C...

There doesn't seem to be a normal case for what they provide in stations nowadays, I'm sure the up and down sides of Rugby are done differently for instance.
