Did the subject of holidays not come up during the recruitment process? If it's a post that would require a training course, TOC's normally say you can't take leave during the course.

Yes, it does matter. If you cannot complete the whole course in one go, tell them before it starts. Every TOC I have applied with provided a opportunity to declare any commitments - why didn't you tell them when you had the interview or accepted the job?

Probably for fear of the employer looking negatively at it which I think is understandable.

In any case, if they haven't specifically asked the question or stated when the training starts then I certainly wouldn't volunteer the information.

They certainly should have asked if the applicant has any holiday commitments at some point.

If they haven't, you will need to inform them asap Samsam22!

Certainly for your classroom based learning which is for the 1st few months you will need to have 100% attendance as I'm sure you realise the entire intake of trainees will not sit around for a week til you return from holiday and the schedule is such with PTS and other 'ticks in boxes' to be made for you to continue etc that you would have no opportunity to catch up.
There will be a week programmed into your training probably about 3 months in so sorry to say it's a question of what you want more the holiday or the career. I know, I cancelled mine mate.

How about letting someone else who isn't going to mess the company around have the job? I have no doubt the TOC would have asked for details of any outstanding commitments - given that railway jobs tend to be oversubscribed, they can and will find someone who is honest and committed to the job - unless perhaps the holiday is being taken for bereavement/compassionate reasons.

I was never asked (either on application or interview) if I had any holiday booked. As I said, if they don't ask I don't tell and its hardly messing the company around.

Its a bit different if they do ask and you say you haven't any commitments when you actually do.

If you have a holiday booked in the middle of training you will be asked to cancel it if it is in the middle of a course. If they asked you at interview and you gave them the dates that would have been logged. This is catch 22 if you call tnem now they may cancel your application, if you leave it until you start thay may let you go after you have chucked your previous job in. It's your shout buddy but I would tell them now if it was me!

Ok, just be aware that they're at liberty to let you go immediately if you fail to complete the required training.

Massive failure on the part of HR for them not to check!!

This is interesting as I'm awaiting on an application for the trainee jobs at Blackpool and I have a honeymoon booked for mid August. I wonder if the Mrs would mind if I was to cancel it? :(

Not sure what I'd fear the most.,attending the interviews/assessments etc or telling her the honeymoon is off! (Takes a big gulp)!!

Nothing new. When I went for an interview once, they said "Can you start next week?" despite me clearly putting on the recruitment form that my period of notice with my employer was 4 weeks.

On 40k plus per year you can have a honeymoon anytime you like. Once a year if it pleases you! It's a no brainer mate!!
