Some interesting photos there.

Makes St Pacras' new building look even more out of place then it does when on the ground

I can't imagine ANY angle making that extension look good! Mind you, the add-on to King's Cross looks a bit odd too.

The home of the concrete cow
There's a reason why it looks like that, and it's do with its Grade I listing. This covers not only the building itself, but views of the building, such as that from the NLL, Primrose Hill and Hampstead Heath.
To preserve these views, English Heritage insisted that any extension must not markedly impinge on the view of the Barlow trainshed, hence it being flat.

It's a shame the structure couldn't have been extended, using the same materials. Of course, costs would have hit the roof (!).

I'm glad someone else noticed that. Doesn't detract from the fact it's a spectacular building. It sticks out like a sore thumb from the air.

Things I've wondered- what is the purpose of the concrete structure to the west of the Kings Cross suburban shed? The one that has the "stepped" roof- at a guess, it seems to be where the old route down to the "Hotel Curve" to the Widened Lines was- and there's a sloping road inside it (with a baggage trolley stand at the top of the ramp...).

It was a bit of a shock using Kings Cross for the first time a while recently to see the massive temporary office block had gone!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The photo shows well quite how preposterous (in a good way) the Midland's station really is. Even once the old concourse is removed from Kings Cross, it'll look quite plain and functional- yet if it didn't have such an over the top neighbour, it would look very grand and dignified

Yes but then you wouldn't have been able to see the original structure!
You could have, just from the inside. You would have been able to see the old shed from the roof, just not seeing the grand arch from ground level.

They have ruined St Pancras with what looks like an obvious extension. They would have been better spending the money and just extending the (what was) existing structure.

Would that have been so important IF they'd merely extended the roof and it looked the same? Would English Heritage have been that pedantic if you were keeping with the original design (as I am sure would have been the case if it had been built longer in the first place).

In Rail, Issue 693 April 4th - April 17th, there's an article on "The new King's Cross" with a view from high above York Way and this is described as "Offices, with retail development on the ground floor."
