How often is very rarely? 13 minutes is roughly the correct amount of time it takes to do leaving Preston to arriving at Lancaster on a 390, certainly on a clear run it is very easy to keep to. I wouldn't say I find any hard to keep to, otherwise they wouldn't be timetabled for that long!

We soon find out if things are too short. Regardless of the 3 minute rule to trigger a delay in TRUST, if trains consistently lose time in a section it gets noticed and flagged up. There have often been delay incidents opened on suspect sections where 1 minute delays get chucked in.

xx26 & xx56 arrivals at Ashford from Charing Cross never seem to arrive on time, from my experience. I imagine this has something to do with pathing in the London Bridge/New Cross area.

Doesn't it sometimes happen where trains never run to time? For example on NRE before a train has even left it can be expected to depart the origin ontime, be 2 minutes late throughout and arrive at the terminus on time?

XC Voyagers between Plymouth and Totnes are not booked enough time, and nearly always arrive at the due departure time and leave up to 2 minutes behind time.

Leaving Plymouth at xx.25 and arriving Totnes is xx.49 just does not seem possible - especially with the slow approach to Totnes of 25 mph! Can't think of a time I have ever been on a voyager that has arrived at Totnes as booked at xx.49, even on the first train of the morning!

Bidston -> Upton (Merseyside)

According to the timetable (weekday daytimes) trains typically depart Bidston at xx:32, and arrive Upton at xx:33.

The stations are around a mile and three quarters apart by rail, and there's a sharp bend in the track just outside Bidston.

In reality, this routinely happens (Photo taken at Upton):-

I don't know why they don't just adjust the timetable accordingly. :D

The Sheffield to Manchester local stopping service seems to have great difficulty keeping to time. Many times I've been stood at Reddish North and the train is anything up to 10 mins late.

PTT differential there again, WTT times are 4 minutes between the two stations. That whole service seems incredibly odd as there are differentials at every stop.

That is bad! Its a route I've used quite a bit. It takes me half an hour to walk from Chapel to Chinley. I get to Chinley expecting it to be 4-5 down. Even if it I'm pushing it, I expect to have 4-5 additional minutes and I've never yet missed it.

That is probably because the WTT is probably 2 minutes later than the GBTT (Passenger Timetable)!

That often happens because it is delayed at Sheffield by the Cleethorpes - Manchester Airport service, booked to leave Sheffield 3 mins. before the stopping service.

Yeah exactly, majority of public don't know there are 2 different timetables. WTT can sometimes be 6-7 min out sync with passenger times causing confusion amongst passenger when they think the trains late and when really it's on time.

Thanks for the info, I just had to look those abbreviations up.

Until now, I had no idea there were things such as passenger timetables and working timetables and that they could be different!

As a passenger, I naively just thought there was "the timetable" and that was it. We'll I've learnt something there and that certainly explains things as they are now.

Might be better if they bring the PTT a bit more in line with the WTT on this route though. :D

Cambridge-Whittlesford for some reason in the mornings, the train is consistently two or three minutes late at Whittlesford.

17:08 loco haul fife circle on its return the passenger time at south gyle is something like 19:10 but the WTT states you sit until 19:17. Quite a difference.

Is it possible for an eastbound North London Line service to depart Finchley Road & Frognal within 60 seconds of departing West Hampstead ?

1S55 Was the only XC service Northbound that managed to get to and leave Totnes On Time
so I see what you mean! :P

Makes a change too, for XC to have a tight timetable!!

as has been said usually blame TPE (and sometimes EMT) and the amount of walkers we can get around Edale and Hope, however with the make up Time after Reddish North we are usually only a few minutes down at Picc

THat's not entirely true, usually it leaves ontime then has to wait just outside Sheffield until the express passes. So it leaves the Sheffield platform ontime but is late by Dore & Totley

This service often used to be late when they used a power-trailer 101 instead of a power-twin unit. The power-trailers were usually confined to the shorter Rose Hill and Marple services but it didn't always work out like that!

On another occasion someone threw a brick through a window quarter light near Ryder Brow, smashing it. The train was only 10 minutes late as a result but the guard insisted we travel for free.

Raynes Park to Wimbledon in the morning peak. All up trains at Wimbledon always seem to be a couple of minutes late, probably because of the long dwell times due to everyone only waiting by the rear two carriages...

Surely it would make sense to go to the front because of the layout at Waterloo?

No room left in the front by the time they're at Wimbledon!

But that reminds me, all down trains from Wimbledon seem to lose a minute to Raynes Park if they are taking the Epsom / Chessington side but they don't lose the time if they are heading straight on towards Surbiton; I am guessing this is because the timetable does not allow for the slower approach to take the diverging line?

It should and I am surprised it doesn't, though saying that, adding that minute for what must be approach control signalling would probably screw the timetable. I would be amazed if it hasn't been brought up.

The Ashford late arrivals seems to be on time at Staplehurst, but I'm unsure about how the delays appear

On a local stopping service near you
I know the Walsall to Wolverhampton stopper, is NEVER on time, but that's due to the amount of trains that travel between Birmingham and Wolverhampton (10tph) and the majority are fast/stop at one local station
