Hi, Looking for some help with fares!

Outward Journey:
Bristol Temple Meads - Edinburgh on Monday 6th August leaving early morning (around 8ish)

Return Journey:
Edinburgh Waverley - Bristol Temple Meads on Saturday 11th August arriving late evening time.

Passenger - 1 x Senior Railcard holder.

National rail enquires suggests return of £142 without railcard and £93.70 with.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives as I'm sure there must be some good splits available, as the quoted price seems a fair wack.

Cheers

Will

£93.70 for a round trip of almost 800 miles doesn't seem too bad! Splitting at Cheltenham and/or Birmingham might help to bring the cost down, but at this relatively late stage you may be at the whim of whatever XC Advance fares are available.

Please can you quote which price you are looking at for £93.70, i see no such ticket. The off peak return Bristol Temple Meads - Edinburgh with a senior railcard route NOT LONDON is £100.40

They are both advance tickets

Outward 08:30 BRI - EDB (direct) £47.50

Return 14:52 EDB - BRI (changing at BNS) £46.20

Hope that makes sense!

Can I suggest that for such a small difference, you seriously consider purchasing the flexible Off-Peak Return instead of the Advance fares? If you miss your train for any reason other than being delayed by the railways then your Advance ticket will have no value.

You cannot travel until 09.30 on weekdays with the Bristol Temple Meads - Edinburgh Route Not Via London Off-Peak Return, however I believe it is worth the small inconvenience in exchange for flexibility.

Why not BRI*- Armadale:
£104.90 with railcard, rte "Any Permitted", 2T restriction (valid after 04:15, BoJ permitted on both legs)

According to trainscanbecheaper.info, the shortest route is via "Edinburgh Group" (via Birmingham and Preston), so there is no need for a "fares check".

This is slightly more expensive than a BRI-EDB SVR, but does allow travel before 09:30 on weekdays.

*This flow is the same price from most Bristol stations (other than those on the Severn Beach line).

If we're going down this route then

Swindon (Wilts) - Glasgow Cen/Qst
Route Not Via London
Off-Peak Return
£100.30 Restriction 2T
(with Senior Railcard)

is also 2T-restricted, is valid going Glasgow - Edinburgh - Birmingham - Bristol - Swindon, has no break of journey restriction and is even cheaper.

Thank goodness for Virgin. ;)

If you are willing to consider a slower, but probably quieter, route then I suggest:
Off-Peak Returns with Senior Railcard

Bristol Temple Meads - Ludlow £22.95 (Validity 8A - Out & Return: By any train.)
Ludlow - Warrington Stations £22.70 (Validity 8A - Out & Return: By any train.)
Warrington Stations - Edinburgh route Via Carlisle £46.40 (Validity 2U - Out & Return: Mon-Fri not before 04:15.)

Total £92.05
A suitable itinerary may be:
Monday 6 August
0754 Bristol Temple M - Newport S Wales 0827
0904 Newport S Wales - (1016 Ludlow 1017) - Crewe 1129
1209 Crewe - (1226 Warrington BQ 1227) - Carlisle 1401
1411 Carlisle - Edinburgh 1539

Saturday 11 August
1252 Edinburgh - (1539 Warrington BQ 1539) - Crewe 1558
1608 Crewe - (1715 Ludlow 1715) - Newport S Wales 1833
1844 Newport S Wales - Bristol Temple M 1918

Easyjet can beat that fare if you can be flexible with your departure times avoids sitting on a voyager for hours too

Advances are available from Bristol to certain stations in the North West via Hereford and from certain stations the North West to Edinburgh which reduce the price to £60-70. I'll have a better look tomorrow morning.

Edit - sorry, I was too busy today with a huge fares enquiry. I'll check tomorrow morning.

Bristol to Liverpool via Hereford should throw out some cheap £11.90 tickets with a railcard.

I have to agree, it's usually about £60* return with Easyjet, if you can travel with hand luggage only (ICAO size rollaboard - no max weight beyond what you can lift). Occasionally they do promotions of £40 return... Might be an option to consider

*Includes their £9 booking fee
