Curious route

I had a London Kings X (KGX) to Newcastle (NCL) ticket recently which was an Advance for a single journey on East Coast, priced £9.95 (with Railcard), and routed EC & CONNECTNS. Why was there & CONNECTNS when I was using only EC, rather than AP EC TRNS ONLY?

Could have been there was no tickets for the quota AP EC TRNS ONLY at £9.90?

Is AP EC TRNS ONLY not simply used for special offers? As far as I know EC & Connections is used for all EC Advances, whether or not there are any connections.

Edit - this only applies to tickets to/from certain station clusters where connections can be made (e. g. certain Edinburgh stations / London Terminals).

The Tickets will, presumably, have been issued for travel between London Terminals and Newcastle (and not London Kings Cross and Newcastle). Only the Seat Reservation will be for travel between the 2 EC stations. No Reservation can be made on a connecting train to/from e.g. Farringdon or Moorgate and no Reservation Coupon for that leg of the journey would be printed.

This flows from the availability of travel to/from London Terminals which includes other London Terminal stations.

All East Coast's Advances (other than special offers) on that route are printed to allow for connecting services to/from other valid London Terminals.

It has the happy benefit of meaning that in the event of any cancellation you could use the next train regardless of operator to complete your journey, without having to rely on goodwill/discretion.

Moorgate is but only on the route Moorgate-Finsbury Park which would involve a double back between Finsbury Park and Kings Cross
So i'm not sure that your argument is right

The ticket in question was an e-ticket so could not in any event have been used at Moorgate or Farringdon.

There is a historical easement for LUL services (not FCC/Thameslink) via Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Northern Lines for travel between Moorgate and Kings Cross, however it is not valid to alight or board at Farringdon.

Thank you for that clarification.
I gave the e.g. of Moorgate or Farringdon without due care. You are correct. All of my many EC Advances are printed Newcastle <-> London Terminals on the Tickets, whilst the Reservations are printed simply to/from Kings Cross and I've used Newcastle - London Advances regularly. When its raining I've also used them for onward travel to Moorgate (and they've been accepted by machine and staff every time). I had included Farringdon in error.

[I might try a Newcastle - London ticket in the barriers of Farringdon and City T/L sometime to test the implementation.]

I also believe this might have something to do with available quota for different tiers and routes too.

I have in my possession a Route XC & Connections ticket from a couple of months back between Bristol Temple Meads and Exeter St Davids. The reservation is solely on CrossCountry between these two stations. The & Connections part is not needed. The ticket was sold as the cheaper tiers of Route XC ONLY fares were sold out for that flow that day.

Looking at Avantix Traveller it appears there is in fact no AP EC TRNS ONLY advance tickets on the flow. How peculiar.
