Network Rail has confirmed that the work to resignal Nottingham station will take place next year, with substantial changes to timetables in the period 20 July - 20 August 2013.

The work has stopped short of a complete closure of the station for over four weeks which was originally mooted.

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/news/2...ound-Nottingham-with-a-100m-pound-investment/

We're re-laying six miles of track and installing more than 140 new signals bringing a faster and more reliable railway infrastructure. We're also closing three signal boxes and two footpath crossings bringing greater efficiency and safety to the line, and we'll renew two level crossings to the east.

The Government has also announced plans to electrify the line to Nottingham.

Better train services and a better station

Our route managing director for East Midlands, Martin Frobisher said: “This investment in Nottingham will bring a huge improvement for passengers. Nottingham is such an important city in the east midlands and the station improvements will create the gateway which the city deserves. The improvements to the railway infrastructure will improve the flexibility, speed and reliability of the services to and from the city."

The new platform we'll build at Nottingham station will complement the Nottingham Hub Project which is set to start in September 2012 delivering better station facilities.

Temporary changes to train services

Because of the scale and complexity of the work, there will be some major changes to East Midlands Trains services from 20 July-26 August 2013. The full timetable for the period is currently being finalised, however the following
changes are expected to take place:

•no London services will serve Nottingham station and will instead be starting and terminating at East Midlands Parkway station with connecting replacement bus services

•services between Nottingham and Skegness will be affected, with services starting and terminating at Grantham during part of the work

•other services to and from Nottingham will be affected during the work - details will be confirmed at eastmidlandstrains.co.uk in advance of work starting

Yes i beleive the Station Panel is the last in Trent PSB, all other panels went into the new EMCC some time ago. Another PSB to bite the dust, but atleast, i think, there have been no redundancies fro anything so far that has transfered into the EMCC.

no surprises about the london services, no way they could terminate at Beeston. does that include the Leicester 'sprinters'?
Strangely quiet about XC/EMT/Northern services towards Derby & Sheffield...? wonder where they will terminate?

Ah problem solved, there will be a replacement service provided by Great Central Railway ( or at least in the hopes of 'railsupporter' commenting on this article:

mmmm.

Good to hear. The run in to Nottingham from the Grantham line is currently very slow was not sure whether signalling, PW or Nottingham congestion (ie timetabled to allow potentially needed recovery time) was the issue.

When the works are done will this allow the EMT Norwich - Liverpool timings to be improved?

Cheers!

not sure about east of nottingham, but there will certainly be a time saving getting into Nottingham from the North West, most trains wait just outside the station for paths onto platforms.

Where will the new platform be? The disused one opposite platform 1?

Interesting to see that platform 4 is to be converted to a bay platform, that will not be able to accommodate a HST set. This is the platform currently used by the HSTs, so I'm presuming it will now be used by local services - with the London trains now departing from platform 3 or 5. Nice to see extra flexibility being created, will hopefully reduce hold ups for trains coming off lines from the west.

As I understand it, London trains will use platforms 5 & 6 (to become 6 & 7). The western approach tracks are being reconfigured so London/Derby trains will use the southern pair, Mansfield/Alfreton trains the northern.

Any chance that any pre-electrification work can be done during the line closures, eg. mast bases, bridge reconstruction. It would make sense though I realise that there is not much time to plan any of this.

So from the image on the Network Rail website I assume the through line that will not become a platform will be removed?

What does this do to the through freight trains (coal and oil tanks?)

Will the new signals that will be installed as part of the project be ultra-lightweight LED type signals or more conventional ones? I assume any existing signal bases will be reused where possible right?

Yes, it seems strange that (if the rendering of platform 4 is to be believed) the other through line is going - it's used by freight and for stabling at night times. Seems like a retrograde step to remove a through line when there is a fair amount of traffic - oil, steel from Boston, etc - going throgh Nottingham

Not sure of the exact type of signal to be used but i think it'll be the "Dormer" style LED signals.
New signal post and gantries all round. The new bases are already installed for several miles around, and some new gantries already installed on the approach to Nott's from the Beeston direction, as well as what appears to be a massively over-engineered one to the east of the station opposite Eastcroft sidings.

Very interesting indeed, I was always under the impression that platform 6 was to be converted into an island platform to make the extra platform, I believe provision is made for it in the city council's hub project but as others has said this stubbing of platform 4 and adding a smaller platform on the loop as well as removing a loop seems an odd move.

Surely you could just remove one of the through lines (as they already plan to do) and fit a single platform face onto the other through line.... or would it be too narrow with modern specifications?

Massive mast bases seem to be a major waste of money now that we have extremely lightweight signals tested under main line conditions near Pelaw on the section shared with the Tyne and Wear Metro.

(VMS Ultra-lightweight LED signals that are a hinged pole so that they can be maintained at ground level and raised and lowered by only two men).

I think the gap left between 6 and the new car park allows 6 to become an island at a later date if needed.

Oil is perhaps an understatement, if my reading of Hazchem codes is correct it's mostly Petrol, certainly the bulk waggons that come through Beeston.

I couldn't really care to be honest.

I thought I was doing you a favour of pointing out your mistake, and by directing you to the company's website so you could glean more information. Evidently not though.
