Since when did FGW rename itself to Les Chemin de Fer de la Grand Ouest?

All the more reason for SNCF to have tendered the GW franchise...

My two takes on it:

* Are the apartments behind possibly owned by a French company and they acquired one of these signs (or had it from another development in France).

* It was erected by a local/resident as a "novelty" feature.

Might even have been put up especially for the occasion. I had a quick look round (to see if there had been a mistake) and there's a 15mph speed limit on the road just south of there, that's a bit strange as well.

I found it on Skyscrapercity when looking at the Reading Rebuild, someone had taken a picture, said the road name and off to streetview I went

The adjacent factory (Unit B4) is operated by Thales and presumably make parts for the TGV, so the French HGV drivers need a reminder of where to go, to take them back to the main road

All well in theory but "Gare" specifically means railway station.

So it's a sign to the High Speed Train Station. In French. In Britain.

I do wonder what would happen if we started sticking double-arrows symbols in France...

Funnily enough, the Nex would point the right way. In Germany, you would have to use the Sealink Nex.

It is however pointing in the right direction to get to Reading station where you can catch.the HST to London (amongst other places).

Given that it is near the Thales unit, I guess it might just be there for any French staff that pop over?
