Did everyone get out ok? I'm surprised to see this happen to a Stagecoach vehicle, they're normally among the best for maintenance. I've known Arriva vehicles torch themselves on a few occasions in my area but this surprises me.

Stagecoach only have 16 (15 now, I suppose) Excel 2s in total - so they're no over familiar with the type.

A stagecoach was torched in Freckleton last year. Now as a result we have a new fleet of buses running the 68 instead of the bonfire material ones we used to have.

The "new" buses (04 plate Tridents) were on 68 well before 16391 was torched. 16391 was just covering for one that had broken down. You are correct that the rest of the N reg Olympians were replaced, by slightly newer Tridents from Kendal, for services 59 and 61, but that had been planned before the arson incident, to get those services low floor. The rest of the Olympians were withdrawn after a number of cutback exercises with the fleet, meaning the Preston College 4C routes used a bus off the 68 instead of the 68 bus sitting doing nothing for 15 minutes, and 59 & 61 were interworked to reduce the number of buses needed on there.

All passangers and the driver got off saftley a telephone wire was destroyed by the heat and a near by telepgraph pole was scortched -why do they ALWAYS (OR NEARLY ALWAYS) stop underneath something

Probably because they want to stop and get passengers off ASAP. Sod the wire, the insurance will pay for it as long as no-one is injured or killed

The same reason why when a car leaves the road it always hits a tree / telegraph pole / street lamp. It is just the case that it makes news rather than it happens more often. If the same car left the road when there was nothing to hit then it would either get stuck or carry on and no-one would know about it. If the telephone wire wasn't their so what, but as it was the press add it to thier story.

That's quite an alarming picture.
Approximately how much warning would you have that something like that was about to happen, and how long would it take for the bus to be completely burned-out like that?

It depends on the circumstances, but often these things can start very quickly and engulf the bus in no time at all. There was a recent incident in Lincolnshire caused by an electrical fault that destroyed Trident 18032 in a matter of minutes, luckily the driver and sole passenger evacuated safely.

Glad to hear that this incident also didn't result in any injuries.

Seriously though I'd allow the use of my photos if they paid the going rate for freelance photos.

Sadly buses just aren't very fire retardent, once they're burning it's a case of get the hell out. If there wasn't such a desperate scramble to save weight then perhaps the builders might have some scope to design this sort of thing out of their vehicles, but sadly thanks to the EU and their endless grinding legislation, every possible compromise has to be made :(

Optare stuff isn't all that bad surely, they get such a bad press but I always liked whizzing about in Solo's!

Sorry to read in the earlier posts about 16391 being set alight, good motors those old Vollys.

be interesting to find out what caused that. normally it's electrical faults around my part, whenever one torches itself....

could happen to any bus, happened to out 4717 in the arriva midlands fleet, that torched itself and was written off.

It is a concern how regularly buses seem to self combust :| Particularly when fire suppression kit is not fitted to many of them. Certainly on the railways, if something has an engine then it will have an automatic fire system, most of which are very effective and putting out anything that might start smouldering. Don't recall any trains being burnt out in the recent past due to spurious self-inflicted blazes.

I NEVER allow them to use fire / rtc photo's in press , because it gives the industry a bad image and also allows the companies to say "bus phorgraphers " take rtc/ fire shots and they end up in press. It wouldnt be so bad if the press reporting of such incidents wasnt over the top - the press report of the above fire claim the bus exploded

I can't help but feel that Stagecoach were incredibly lucky to have dodged a bullet there - the damage could have been so much worse than 2 Olympians and a Solo.

16044 is ex-London and therefore will have had a low book value, and while admittedly 16775 had a few years left in it, at the end of the day it is just an Olympian.

Until operators learn not to leave their primary assets sitting around unsecured in public places all night, this will always continue to happen, along with a similar sort of idiots nicking them.

There have been far too many very destructive incidents over the years resulting from thieves getting behind the wheel of buses left where they could be easily 'got at', perhaps it's time the owners were made at least partially liable for taking such a lax attitude to securing them. I can think of numerous locations close to where I am where anybody could quite easily stroll up, jump into their choice of vehicle and, in most cases, start it up with minimal effort or intelligence required. Stagecoach or whoever might not give a toss if somebody writes off an ageing Olympian or B10M that was left outside every night because of inadequate depot facilities, but owners of the street full of cars it might have wiped out at the same time may well feel differently :|
