Are there any Network Rail stations that cannot be reached from London without changing more than once? For obvious reasons, the isle of wight is excluded.

As an aside, is the Network designed to work in this way?

Now the OP has re-edited the question, it's a good conundrum. As has been pointed out, Stourbridge Town: but I'm racking my head to think of others.

Ah - what about the Barton-on-Humber line?

That one springs normally springs to mind, put if being pedantic there are services to Whitby that start at Darlington (so GC to Eaglescliffe and a change), and also there is the summer Sundays only Newcastle - Whitby service.

I think that's a good shout, I can't think of a way of doing it with less than two changes.

I'm struggling to think of any others - even into the far reaches, you can do most longer distance journeys with only a single change. The advantages of a compact country helping us out again.

Why excluding that line?

I think gnolife must have been thinking that Euston-Liverpool services called at South Parkway, which serves the Hunts Cross-Southport branch of Merseyrail. Alas, the service doesn't call, I believe because 9-car sets don't have SDO, and it's complex to extend the platforms at LPY. Of course, Southport can be reached direct from Manchester Piccadilly once an hour,

Indeed, I suspected it had something to do with South Parkway.

There's a couple of direct peak trains per day from London-Seaford isn't there though?

Indeed.

In suburban Glasgow, stations on the Balloch line require at least 2 changes from London (except on Sundays), as do stations on the Springburn line.

Actually, that's about as much as I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned right now...

The railway network wasn't designed to work in any particular way as most lines were promoted as individual enterprises. There were a few exceptions like the London and Birmingham and the original Great Western.

When the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was planned and built travel from London was not a factor in the process (unless buses were arranged from Crown St to the docks!)

Used to be able to say stations on the Oldham Mumps line until it was replaced by trams.

Is there anywhere that is (usually) more than 2 changes from London though?

Depends whether you are talking about a fastest journey (via a permitted route) or the minimum number of changes required by taking a slower train (which may not be covered by normal tickets due to the route)
