Hull to Leeds Options

Not having travelled by rail for a considerable time, I thought it prudent to ask here for advice. I have to get to Leeds from Hull on 3rd August by 14:15 at the latest (arrival at Leeds Station time ) and will be returning anytime after 16:30 ( departing Leeds Station time ).

Looking online, it seems that £17 for two singles is the cheapest way to do this, am I correct ?

£17 is two Advance singles - this will be the cheapest through fare as NRE automatically selects the cheapest fare. These tickets are valid only on the booked train and are worthless if you do not take that service. They need to be booked in advance and may sell out.

I'd advise purchasing an Off Peak Day Return at £19.20 instead - this is a flexible ticket which is valid on any train after 0929. This can be bought on the day.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to split a journey into two or more tickets, or to book a ticket to/from alternative stations (but which are also valid at your intended origin/desintation), but I can't see any savings to be made for this journey.

Seconded. For £19.20 return you can go (and come back) on any train so no need to panic if you miss your booked one.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realise that the singles option was only for the booked trains. Seeing as it's quite an important meeting that I'm going to which could well overrun, the extra £2.20 above the cheaper singles is well worth it.

My tip for anyone going to an important meeting/date is always to go an hour earlier than the train you've planned (applies to driving aswell) and then the worst that will happen is to sit with a coffee for an hour.

That's one example where advances are probably not worth buying as the small saving is outweighed by all the possibilities of failing to make either train.

It's not unusual- most journeys on CrossCountry at fairly short notice (less than a fortnight say) are only marginally cheaper using Advance tickets in my experience.
