As part of the forthcoming improvements, it has been suggested that Doncaster needs a new bay platform. At the moment platform 2 (facing S) seems to be used to park units, though it was used for direct Lincoln trains (of which there are not many now); platform 5 (facing S) is used for Sheffield stoppers; platform 6 (facing N) for Leeds stoppers and platform 7 (facing N) hardly used.

Can anybody elucidate?

most sheffield trains do not terminate at doncaster (adwick and scunthorpe) so p2 is mostly lincoln. Just the peak trains to doncaster because they get split to prevent some conflicts.

I'm wondering whether the need for a new bay suggests the splitting up of the Scunthorpe - Lincoln - Adwick service?

It'd remove the need for quite so many DMUs crossing the ECML on the flat junction.

I can understand the rationale is to stop the crossing of the ECML direct and platform tracks (3 and 4). But I still can't see where a bay could be built and which services it would affect unless you built a north-facing bay next to or in between platforms 1 and 3 (not easy) to curtail the through services from Scunthorpe, Cleethorpes or Hull that go on to Sheffield, which I doubt would be popular.

The (Lincoln)-Sheffield-Adwick services do not cross the main line.

Is there actually going to be another bay constructed? Last time I read I thought they were just going to improve the trackwork to one of the southern bays, as at present one of them can only access the southbound ECML lines.

That would be platform 2 then. But if it needs to access the Sheffield line, then it will have to cross the through lines, which defeats the object?

I can't remember where it was said but I'm sure there was talk of doing that, to allow access to the Sheffield lines. I'll have a look to see what I can find.

I believe access to platform 5 blocks a parallel access to platform 4. Perhaps someone is able to confirm?

If (when) Doncaster -Sheffield is electrified it would make sense for Sheffield -Doncaster trains to be electric and probably go though to Leeds. Scunthorpe to Sheffield stoppers provide a through service from Thorne, Stainforth and Kirk Sandall which SY PTE is likely to insist on, given they provide funding. The PTE also desire a through service Meadowhall to the Worksop line, though this doesn't need to be a Doncaster service, it could be from the Barnsley line as it used to be when Huddersfield trains went to/from Lincoln. The timings on that service were too tight to be reliable, but maybe the Leeds via Castleford might work, or the semi-fast?

Given the regular delays on platforms 4 & 8 at Doncaster, often caused y late running East Coast services, I would have thought a new island platform on the goods lines (one face or two) would be good for Northern's locals, leaving 4 and 8 for EC, XC, Hull Trains, TPE and Northern's fast Hull-Sheffield.

You'd do well to provide access from platform 2 to the Sheffield lines - there doesn't look to be the room to do so, at least not without complicated pointwork that'd affect the alignment of the fast lines.

Just to confirm, it's not possible to make parallel moves to/from 5 and the south end of 4.
