I don't think we've had this one before (?) - what are the largest British places with no terminating services?

I was thinking about Rotherham (which sees services to Scunthorpe, Lincoln, Leeds etc, but none actually terminate there), Halifax (services to Manchester, Blackpool, York etc but again I'm not aware of any terminators), Durham (lots of ECML services, but I can't remember any scheduled to terminate) and Chesterfield (another place on a main line that sees only longer distance services).

Are there any better ones? (or have I missed some terminators at these stations?)

Do tfl-run trains count for this question? If not then - does anything apart from the Overground terminate at Clapham Junction? ;)

I don't know what the populations are, but does anything terminate at Hartlepool or Newport (South Wales)?

Hmm - good suggestions.

Newport used to have a token Valley Lines operated service terminating there, and there's plans for Ebbw Vale services to terminate there one day, but at the moment I can't think of any.

Hartlepool? There used to be some Newcastle - Sunderland services that extended to Hartlepool (in the past), plus I think that there was a Darlington - Hartlepool Sunday service a couple of years ago - neither terminates there now.

Can't fault either of those :)

Now the Milton Keynes trains goes to South Croydon it's rare for anything to terminate at East Croydon. Although I think a few do in the peak.

The London Bridge-West Croydon via Streatham service runs to East Croydon on Sundays, as well as some WLL services. The last up service from Uckfield also terminates there.

Staying in the London area, what about Wimbledon?

I'd have said Bradford Interchange before Grand Central.

Now, possibly Liverpool Central - nothing technically terminates there.

Last train from Uckfield terminates before running empty to Selhurst Depot, then one or two services from London Bridge/Victoria after midnight and not forgetting the London Bridge via Norbury stoppers on a Sunday.

Beat me to it ;)

Wimbledon gets a few SWT metro services terminating, before running empty to Clapham Yard/Wimbledon Park.

As far as I know only one train terminates at Bury St Edmunds each day, the 22:16 from Ipswich. On that note, does anything terminate at Stowmarket?

Surbiton is a pretty busy station with only 4 platforms and has no terminators except during engineering work or disruption when trains are turned around there.

Don't all services from Kirkby and Ormskirk terminate at Liverpool central

Yes normally they do, and services from New Brighton,West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port are announced as terminating there, although technically they don't and continue back to their origin.

I think what Lampshade is saying is that nothing terminates because the station is closed!! Although I think even then rail replacement buses may do.

Hitchin has a couple of morning services that start there but the terminating services usually go on to terminate at Letchworth.

And the Southern peak-time services (technically they do go round the loop, but are timetabled to terminate at Wimbledon...)

Hartlepool has a morning service from Newcastle (departs around 06.00 from NCL) which terminates, and then forms the workers service back to Newcastle. There was also two services on Sundays which went from Darlington to Hartlepool and back, terminating and using the bay platform, however Northern have now extended this service to the MetroCentre. So that means that there is currently no booked service to use the bay platform at Hartlepool.

(Re Wimbledon)

Depends whether you're counting the District Line and Croydon Tramlink?

Well if you do count the district line, then the answer becomes easy: If tube trains count as real trains for the purposes of this quiz, then the runaway winners of 'biggest stations without terminating trains' would be tube stations in central London (assuming 'biggest' = 'most trains'). I don't think any national rail station could compete against a tube station like Oxford Circus or Green Park, say, that have three tube lines each running trains on couple-of-minute frequencies! (And as far as I'm aware, nothing would normally terminate at them).

If you follow that reasoning, then I think the clear winner amongst tube stations, would be Kings Cross St. Pancras. But only if you count it as a separate station from the national rail stations (otherwise the terminating national rail trains rules it out).

Halifax (services to Manchester, Blackpool, York etc but again I'm not aware of any terminators)

Think there were some Halifax terminators, but not got the current timetable handy.

Chesterfield is a good one though - used to have the Leeds-Chesterfield pacers (fast Westgate to meadowhall) though these all go Nottingham now.

So which is the winner out of Farringdon and Vauxhall? I assume Farringdon no longer has the (former class 317 operated) terminator from Bedford?
