Hey all, now I know it's usually not the nicest of sights to greet people when you come into or leave Crewe from the South but does anyone know where the sudden disappearance of most of coaches that occupied the sidings by the Diesel TMD have gone? as I seemed to notice on my way to Wolverhampton last night that it is rather empty at this present moment.

They're down at Wembley for Olympic 'standby' extras out of Paddington, Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross.

Ohhhh so that's what those two rakes of Virgin mark 2s (and the odd Anglia representative) are doing down at Wembley all of a sudden. I had wondered, and had failed to consider the Olympic connotations.

Somewhere, not in London
So all these spectators see modern britain of the 60s and 70s with knackered Mk2 coaches ferrying them up and down the WCML and GWML, can I guess the traction on the GWML would be 57s?

I believe that DB Schenker are providing the traction for the reliefs: DBS 90s out of Euston, and as far as I can tell class 67s working out of Paddington. 67029 and 67026 were towed into Wembley yard yesterday, and are sitting around there today, with 67016 also in evidence.

The trains will be stabled in the listed London termini each night and will be used at the discretion of the TOC should there be people still about after the last trains have left. This will be as follows:

1 set with a 67 at Paddington
2 sets with 90s on both at Euston
1 set with a 67 at St Pancras
2 sets with one being a 90 the other a 67 at Kings Cross

Very useful and interesting info Chester025 thanks.

At their discretion though, this could end in disaster :/ i wonder if TOCs can do the same with EMUS at the southern terminals. I know volunteers at the olympic park are going to struggle to make the last trains out of waterloo most nights.

Good to see them being put to good use, lets hope in a way that they are needed to make it worthwhile.
Then, after the olympics, hopefully they will stick around so that maybe we could see more FOOTEXs etc in future.

"At their discretion" - I imagine they will run them anyway as it would be a PR disaster otherwise. By the time the sets have been leased and put into position, they might as well run the service. I can see the extras being rammed full.

The big question now is 'where will these extras go?' and which TOC will operate them (LM or Virgin for example)

What condition are these in internally? Could they see use as targeted extra capacity for events?

Strange that the 9 317/7s haven't been used...

If these are the ones that belong to Riviera then I travelled on a set back in November 2010, externally they are not much to look at but internally they are in a fairly decent nick.

They don't appear to have been refurbished as they still have Virgin and Intercity seat patterns on the IC70 seats? The automatic vestibule doors were functional on all of the carriages that I had been on and the bathrooms appeared to be ok as well. All in all they are in good condition, just a shame nobody bothered to paint them as it will all boil down to first appearances...

Can anyone confirm the rakes, or at least the numbers of all the coaches being used
Thanks, Sam

I wonder where the services out of KGX would stop i.e if they'd stop at FCC stations too, or only EC.

They are for extra service if the TOCs need them to clear a station after the final services of the day have run. The word was they were going to be used after the opening ceremony but it seems the TOCs just held the last trains. Perhaps tat was a better option for them

I guess the test will come IF a big Olympic event overruns.

From what i understand they are not to be provided during the Paralympics

What bigger than the opening ceremony overrunning?

well the TOCs took the decision to hold their last services - which was sensible. It was a Friday night so perhaps they could do so without the risk that the AM peak services would be affected by misplaced staff or stock.

They might NOT do that with a weekday event and choose to use the standby trains.

I should have been clearer.
