We are delighted to be holding our diesel gala on Sat/Sun 28/29 July as our second event this year to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Class 73 ED locomotives. This event should not only sees our resident Class 73, 73118, in operation but an additional visiting Class 73, number 73133, and also English Electric Diesel Class 20 20228 by courtesy of Traditional Traction. 20228 has been out of use for a number of years undergoing a major mechanical overhaul.
Services will run regularly between Barry Waterfront, Barry Island and our Main Depot. We will be running our Mk2f Gatwick Express coaches and hope also to run the vacuum braked Iris 2 railcar set (unpowered) behind 73133.
Trains leave Barry Island at 11.45, 13,30, 14,30 and 15.30 for a round trip including a depot visit that takes 45 minutes.
Standard Class Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for children, £12 family (2 adults & 2 children).
Rover Tickets, giving all day travel are £8.
First Class available for a £1 supplement which includes a free cup of tea or coffee from our cafe.
We'll be pleased to welcome you to Barry Island.

The road movement of 73133 from Selhurst to Barry has had to be cancelled due to the restrictions imposed in the London area due to the Olympic Games by the traffic authorities. As a result all services will be with 73118 and 20228 topping and tailing the Gatex stock as follows: -

The 11.45 and 15.30 departures from Barry Island will be formed of 73118-Gatex-20228 and will to Gladstone Bridge Platform and return to Barry Island stopping at the 5-road Main Depot for a guided tour to view the remaining ex-Barry steam locos (2861, 6686, 44901 & 92245), road rail vehicles and the Turkish 8F loco on site.

The 13.30 and 14.30 departures will comprise 73118-Gatex-20228 and run from from Barry Island to Gladstone Bridge Platform, then return to Waterfront Junction stopping again at the Main Depot for a guided tour of the main depot. At Waterfront Junction the train will reverse and run to the Waterfront Station on the edge of the site of the former Woodhams Scrapyard, which is about to be 'regenerated' and built on.

Apologies for the late notice of the change but the road movement is outside of our road haulier's control.

As I said before, there's still plenty to do and see at Barry.

Thanks for all your posts. Some answers below:

73133 does NOT have thin tyres - ironically the bogies were changed the week before the loco was withdrawn by EWS but the details of the change were never oficially recorded. The present bogies under 73133 can take another couple of 'turns' yet.

We did consider moving the loco by rail but 73133 has been in store for nearly 2 years now and we concluded that getting a 'fitness too run' exam including the necessary work to make the loco fit for haulage on the main line, plus organising the transit would not be achieveable within the timescale. Besides, we have a contract with a road haulier who will move the loco when the police and road authorities say we can.

We will try to fit in the additional run to Plymouth Road on each trip which, from an operations point of view, should be easier to achieve as all trains are now to be 'top and tailed'. However we have not advertised this as the old footbridge over the railway at Barry Island is currently being demolished and as a result this section of the railway has been under possession this week whilst these works are underway. If the dismantling works are sufficiently advanced, we may be able to operate to Plymouth Road; if not, the possession will have to remain in place.

The empty stock move from the Main Depot to Barry Island is scheduled for a 11.20 departure from the Depot, arriving at Barry Island Station at 11.30.

Best Wishes

John

I have spoken with the footbridge contractor today and they are not now going to take the main span down until Monday. Therefore we are able to operate to Plymouth Road this weekend under the still extant bridge. Hooray!!

Also, we ran 20228 successfully this afternoon - all looking good for tomorrow and the weekend!

Brilliant day at Barry today, the sun shone and Steve Madge's Class 20 loco 20228 worked without a hitch - mechanically and electricall its now really good - a credit to Steve and his team. Can't wait till Steve has painted her in the new BR livery.
Apologies for the 20 min delay on the first train, we did have a problem with the GLV but fairly quickly sorted.
Thanks to everyone who travelled from far and wide to see us.
Looking forward to another fine day tomorrow.

Must admit I'd rather the 20 stayed in CFD livery - there are already plenty of preserved 20s in green, blue, Railfreight, etc

The rain cleared this morning before our train service got underway and we had another good day. Only one little glitch during the day but the resultant delay was only 5-10 minutes which we managed to pick up later. Steve's class 20 worked very well again - he and Martin looked quite pleased with themselves weekend this evening......and so they should be! By the way, I spoke to Steve about the livery today - he still hasn't finally made up his mind yet.
So at the end of our first gala, albeit a small one, my team and I are quite pleased with the way things went overall. However, we have learnt a lot of lessons and we shall review our arrangements and make further improvements for our next Gala. Thanks to everyone who came to support us and for your patience when things didn't quite go to plan. Thanks also for your feedback.
Our next event is Sunday 5th August when we are holding a Toy, Model and Railwayana Swapmeet at Barry island Station - in the station and under the canopy. In connection with this we are running 73118 with the Gatex set in push-pull mode.
See you there?
John
