Might be a project for someone, but does anyone have a list of ticket types or destinations which have a rail journey then travel via another mode of transport - e.g.:

List of SailRail destinations
Hovercraft to IoW
Metrolink/Tyne and Wear Metro add ons.

Not looking for Rovers, PlusBus or all the tickets valid to named stations in Ireland (for the SailRail). Think someone also had a list of tickets that allowed travel on preserved lines, so they can be discounted as well.

Do you also mean places such as the bus links to Wisbech (and many other such places shown on the National Rail network map with dotted lines)?

If there is a list of them to hand, then yes. If not, doesn't matter as I know there will be quite a few. The more obscure the better - for instance I didn't know there was a SailRail type ticket to Holland from East Anglia until relatively recently.

A spreadsheet is attached for the ones that I know of- there may be others.

Owlman, Very useful list,that
Some some minor corrections (concerning bus operators) to ones near me that I'm aware of.

The bus link to Abingdon from Didcot is by way of Oxford Bus Co or Thames Travel buses
Those from Didcot to Harwell and Wantage are both by Thames Travel buses
That to Chipping Norton from Kingham is by way of the "Cotswold Railbus" operated by RH Transport (or, on Sundays only, by Stagecoach)

One missing is the bus link from Tilbury Town to Tilbury Riverside

An obvious one is Rail Air ...

Through ticketing is something I've written about as a case study in my fares research piece, albeit mainly in the London/SE area.

Tickets from stations in Kent/Surrey/Sussex/South London to "Tramlink" routed via Elmers End, Croydon or Mitcham Junction. Using those stations as the origin gives an "Any Permitted" bus fare. Using Birkbeck as the origin throws up an anomaly.

Any ticket with a routed with a Maltese Cross or with routes LU/DLR, Ealing Common/North Acton or Greenford.

Tickets from the South to Calais.

Tickets from the southern MML to southern ECML routed via Hatfield/Albans bus.

Tickets between Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk routed X22/X90.

There's a "CLITHEROE BUS" add-on that lets you use Bowland Transit bus services to places as far away as Settle and Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Very good value at £1.25 single / £2.50 return.

Wasn't there a add-on to use the bus to Mablethorpe from Skegness? I can't find it on brfares.com.

TrawsCambria and CymruConnect are listed on that spreadsheet as operators when neither are?? Also, has anyone here ever purchased a CymruConnect ticket? The impression I have is that alot of staff don't know about it.

Wish I'd known about the Kirkwall one a few years ago! Presumably the Thurso-Scrabster-Stromness option includes a bus to Kirkwall. A break of journey might be useful on that route as well, it takes at least 11 hours.

Are there any preserved railways included? Alresford, Pickering and Oxenhope all sound like possibilities. And what about travelling the other way? While it would be great to ask a bus driver for a return to Penzance, I don't think it really works.

Looks like combined rail+helicopter fares to the Scilly Isles may be a thing of the past come November.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-19090660

BBC said:
Penzance to Isles of Scilly helicopter flights ending

A helicopter service from Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly is to end, its operators have announced.

British International Helicopters (BIH) is to end its service from Penzance, which has run since 1964, in November.

The company blamed the decision on uncertainty created by legal challenges to its sale of land to supermarket giant Sainsbury's.

St Ives' Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George has called the announcement "appalling" and a "disaster".

'Kick in the teeth'

BIH has to move from its 15-acre site at the end of October because of the Sainsbury's deal.

It planned to use the proceeds from the sale to buy new aircraft and bid for new business.

But the company, which has not operated services this week, said the decision to close the route was "finally triggered by legal action taken by Tesco and two private individuals".... (more)

Simplified rail tickets have been on sale on Brighton and Hove Buses for some years :http://www.buses.co.uk/tickets/southernfirst.aspx

On another thread, MetroDriver mentioned through ticketing onto the Midland Metro but I can't find the fares or destinations.

You will probably be better of buying a PlusBus.

Castleton, Derbyshire.

Sheffield to Castleton Return tickets issued on the Hope Valley train service and bus service 272 between Sheffield, Hathersage, Bamford and Hope or Castleton are valid for return by either bus 272 or train (train tickets to/from Hope are valid from/to Castleton on the 272 bus, and bus tickets to/from Castleton are valid from/to
Hope on the train).
Return tickets issued on bus services 272,273, 274 and 275 are valid for return on any of these buses.

Can't forget Edinburgh airport, whether you're changing at Waverley, Haymarket or Inverkeithing!

I'm not sure if you can still buy a ticket to the airport via Haymarket or Waverley - I am trying to do that now without success. The National Rail website says it can only be done if there is a special offer, and the only special offer I can see on the National Rail website is the Inverkeithing one.

The airport's website says you can buy a ticket via Waverley, Haymarket or Inverkeithing when travelling from the airport.

I've bought many a ticket to the airport via inverkeithing before, but only from the ticket office or the guard-I've never seen the option online.
Before the inverkeithing bus started, I'd bought a few tickets from the north via waverley-as far as I'm aware you can still buy tickets via waverley but perhaps only from stations where it's the more convenient route compared to inverkeithing?

So does that mean that I can buy a through ticket from Peterborough to Luton Airport and not have to go via London/ That's useful for me to know. Is it much cheaper?

Sorry, not from Peterborough. The furthest north that this is available appears to be from Huntingdon.

But substantial savings are available, for example:
Huntingdon - Luton Airport

route + Any Permitted
Anytime Return (SOR) £67.00
Anytime Day Return (SDR) £55.60
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) £35.50 (M-F Out: 0900 or later, Return: Any train)

route Hatfld/Albans Bus
Anytime Return (SOR) £39.20
Anytime Day Return (SDR) £26.60
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) £22.70 (M-F Out: 0900 or later, Return: Any train)
If travelling from north of Peterborough, the best option may be to book to/from Stevenage, with either separate tickets from there to Luton Airport or a more direct bus.
Stevenage - Luton Airport

route Hatfld/Albans Bus
Anytime Return (SOR) £29.60
Anytime Day Return (SDR) £20.60
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) £18.00 (M-F Out: 0930 or later, Return: Any train)

First do a ticket which can purchased on the bus from Holmfirth and Meltham to be used connecting with TPE services from Huddersfield to either Leeds or Manchester, available as a return, daily or weekly.
