I saw this text mentioned in the PDf on the EMT website regarding 1st class upgrades during the week:

UPGRADE ON WEEKDAYS
Upgrade to First Class on weekdays to London, starting from just £19 one way from Wellingborough. Get a
guaranteed large seat and table to work, at seat power points and free WiFi. Complimentary refreshments are served at your seat along with a complimentary newspaper.
Ask at the ticket office or your Train Manager on board to purchase your upgrade (upgrade prices are available with a valid Standard Class ticket and are subject to seat availability).

What tickets is this valid with and how is the fare calculated?

I'm planning to go on EMT in September. currently probably using a SSR Potters Bar to Derby (or Matlock) but looking at the options at the moment. The outward would be on a sunday -so the £9 weekend first would apply then but wondered about the upgrade for the return journey - I probbaly won't know what train I will be using until the day.

I might use the route not london ticket & return via Grantham (but would need to excess the outward portion to any permitted as travel via Granthem is not possible on a Sunday morning (& it looks like EMT are diverting from Kettering to Leicester via Corby anyway on sundays in september so a more interesting route!)

There is a poster in the St. Pancras ticket office detailing prices of the upgrades, however I can't find this online. I believe it is £19 to Wellingborough, and the price increases the further up you go. AFAIK stations between Leicester and Derby/Nottingham are between £30 and £35.

The ticket is not excessed, it is issued as a supplement (similar to that of Weekend First).

I will be at St. Pancras tomorrow so will try and get a picture of the poster if it is still there.

It may be relevant that the difference in price between a London <-> Wellingborough Standard Anytime Single (SOS: £53) and First Class Anytime Single (FOS: £72) is £19.

The upgrades (code BDU) are priced for journeys to and from London only, and are as follows:

Luton Airport Parkway £7.00
Luton £7.50
Bedford £10.50
Wellingborough £19.00
Kettering £19.50
Corby £19.50
Market Harborough £20.00
Leicester £30.50
Loughborough £30.50
East Midlands Parkway £31.50
Beeston £31.50
Nottingham £31.50
Chesterfield £42.00
Sheffield £42.00
Derby £47.00

Upgrades to Luton Airport Parkway and Luton undercut the Weekend First fare of £9.00, and are therefore also available at the weekend. The Luton Airport Parkway upgrade is not advertised on the information board at St Pancras, but is sold on train.

£31.50 to Nottingham, £47 to Derby and £42 to Sheffield? Am I reading that right? :|

Isn't it also of note that a London to Nottingham SOR costs £149, which + £31.50 + £31.50 = £212 (the price of an FOR)?

Does the poster say that the upgrades are valid with Advance fares? And do Railcard or child discounts apply?

This leaflet mentions the weekday upgrade but does not define what "a valid Standard Class ticket" is.

Apart from the fares, the text on the poster is very limited:

ASK ABOUT
UPGRADING TO
FIRST CLASS

ONE WAY UPGRADES FROM LONDON
MONDAY - FRIDAY

Ask at the ticket office or your Train Manager on
board to purchase your upgrade.

GET ON BOARD
EAST MIDLAND TRAINS

Upgrade prices are available with a valid Standard Class ticket.

I regularly purchase these upgrades to and from Luton Airport Parkway and Luton, and have a railcard. I asked at St Pancras whether a railcard discount would be applicable, and was told that it would be, but the train manager said that railcard discounts do not apply as the upgrade is classed as a supplement, and not a ticket. I've no idea about child discounts.

Yes, you are reading correctly: Derby is £47; I wonder whether this is a misprint for £37. Oakham and Melton Mowbray are omitted from the list, as are stations to Lincoln.

Certain ticket offices can also sell the upgrades: I have bought them in advance from both Paddington and Victoria, but curiously, Luton Airport Parkway cannot sell them. St Pancras won't sell them, as they don't want to risk seats not being available.

The difference between the FOS and SOS for Derby - London Terminals is £48, so it may not be a misprint. However two lots of the upgrade is more than the difference between the FOR and SOR, at £81.

It is not as if one can take advantage by buying further but stopping short on the upgrade so the differential between the Derby and Sheffield prices is not necessarily a loophole.

I have found upgrades to Newark and Lincoln on Brfares.com (hence how I found this thread!)

They look like this:

BDU EMT 1ST UPGRADE

Has anyone had anymore success buying them?
How would it work in terms of their penalty fare scheme if bought onboard?

In terms of the penalty fare scheme, they are supplements, and are treated in the same way as Weekend 1st. Indeed, where the upgrades are cheaper than Weekend 1st (i.e. for Luton Airport Parkway and Luton) they are also sold at the weekend, although from experience they are not always offered: a friendly enquiry usually does the trick.
