Good evening,

I am not sure if this is in the correct thread, feel free to move this elsewhere if necessary.

Can anyone advise me who works out the timetables for railway routes, is it the individual TOCs or Network Rail working with the TOCs. Who has the final say in timings/routings etc. IE, if a TOC wants to add or withdraw a service/destination or route, can they just do so, or do they have to refer to NR or the Department of Transport? It is a subject I am interested in, perhaps with a view to working in a timetable planning evvironment.

Many Thanks.

I think the DfT seats paramenters for a route then the TOC builds timetables around that.

The TOC will build it's timetable aspirations and then bid to NR, we will then validate the paths, flex or reject them if they do not work. These are then sent back to the TOC/FOC as part of the timetable offer. Anything they don't like they will prepare an offer response to and then we work with them to fix the issues. If we cannot do that it can go down the dispute road where the decision is made a by the disputes panel. If a TOC wants to remove, add or move a path then they will spot bid it to us and the same process applies for that path or paths. That is the very high level explanation of it.

If you are looking to get into timetabling then you are either looking at a TOC/FOC where vacancies are few and far between and usually NR planners are in the queue first, or you work for NR at Milton Keynes.
