My wife was travelling to Huddersfield on Friday & being a nervous traveller we purchased First class tickets for her.

There was no complimentary Tea/Coffee or snacks served on the journey and for part of the journey there were people standing up in the First Class area because Standard Class was full.

Is it worth complaining to TPE or will we be just fobbed off with a Standard letter.

Thanks

Do you know if they declassified First Class?

FTPE offer no refreshments between Liverpool and Manchester; trolleys board at Manchester Piccadilly, and leave the train at either Leeds or York. Trolley services finish around 1900.

When First Class is announced as declassified by the guard, a refund of the difference between Standard and First Class fare is paid by FTPE for the relevant part of the journey.

I have received a refund on a First Class fare when I had to stand on an overcrowded FTPE service with no seats available (the overcrowding aggravated by by having TWO trolleys on board!)

As a general point, do bear in mind that if the advertised food/drink offer doesn't materialise you are not automatically entitled to compensation as it is billed as "complimentary". Quite how moral this is I will leave for you to decide.

Customer-friendly train companies (like Virgin Trains) will often send vouchers as a goodwill gesture if this occurs.

Greedy train companies (like East Coast) will tell you to get lost!

Also if it's a doubled up unit it means the trolley may switch between portions and not be available all the time between Manchester and Leeds/York, although in this case it doesn't sound like it was a 6 car service.
