Llandudno Junction to Llandudno line is operated by a 175/1 that shuttles back and forth every half an hour-ish I think, or when a big service comes in (Euston).

My question is that does it need a 175/1 operating on it when maybe older stock could be used and that 175/1 could be used on one of the bigger routes like Cardiff, Manchester or Birmingham.

By the looks of it a 153 or a 150 could be suitable for the service.

I thought the shuttles were inter-worked with the through Llandudno - Manchester service. This is the reason that you regularly see 3 car trains on the shuttles.

I think the pattern is Manchester - Llandudno - Llandudno Jnc. - Llandudno - Manchester etc.

It looks like this "shuttle" is going to be cut back at the next ATW timetable change (with more services to Bangor than Llandudno too).

I agree that it appears to be inefficient use of resources, but I presume that it's scheduled to be worked by units which also work Manchester - Llandudno? (i.e. a unit can do Chester - Llandudno Junction - Llandudno - Llandudno Junction - Llandudno - Llandudno Junction - Chester in the time that it takes another unit to do Chester - Llandudno Junction - Holyhead - Llandudno Junction - Chester (so this allows ATW to maintain a roughly half hourly service from Chester to Llandudno Junction)?

It is usually whatever 175/1 works into Llandudno from Manchester, it reverses at Llandudno short trip to the Junction back to the town, then back to Manchester.

It works out cheaper than allocating a unit to just work back and for all day. These services are also used as a way to get train crew back to the Junction.

If the wheels are not turning the trains not earning £

I have used the shuttle on a couple of occasions and on both occasions it was nearly empty. Will the through service be less frequent than hourly after the changes? They'll be closing the ticket office next! I have an interest in the Llandudno service as my sister lives there.

That explains the 175/1 then if it is a part of the route but it does seem excessive...

I think if they placed a 153, 150 or maybe relocated the 121 to add some class. Run the shuttle when a Manchester service arrives and when other big services arrive and then run Manchester Picc - Llandudno Junction.

The only problem would be that the 175/1s might block a platform while waiting to return to Manchester, in Llandudno and the bay platform they are out if the way.

I can remember First North Western allocating a class 101 to work the branch, some services being Llandudno to Bangor via the Junction, and an evening Blaenau Ffestiniog to Bangor service..oh the memories

Ahh yes, those Llandudno to Bangor services with 101s bring back memories. It was even better if you had a driver who left the blinds up at the front :D.

The proposed service cuts in September could leave Llandudno with the worst service it's had in a long time.

The shuttles are being cut back from September, replaced if the timetable is to be believed with a Cardiff & less Manchester's.

Look at the thread ATW applies to the ORR for Sept timetable changes.

Remember this branch was due for closure under Beeching, however a local M.P and later Minister Wyn Roberts kept it alive by allowing it to shut on Sundays out of season.
Conwy County Council now fund the Sunday Shuttles Whit to Early September.

Thanks Bob, never knew CC picked up the bill.

Few do,like the services below its to encourage tourism

Also the three return Sunday Summer services Llandudno/Conwy Valley to Blaenau also totally funded by both Conwy & Gwynedd County Councils.

Both Counties fund the Sunday Sept to May three rtn bus services Llandudno to Blaenau which accepts rail tickets, this service was under threat due to WG bus Subsidy cuts, but it seems to have been resolved.

Shuttles will operate on Saturdays ONLY. Monday to Friday it will basically be one in one out throughout the day.

Some Manchester - Llandudno services diverted to Bangor and starting back bound for Cardiff and the same at Llandudno starting from Cardiff and returning back to Manchester. Some confusion to signallers at Llandudno Junction where wrong routing may take place until new timetable settles. Everynody is so used to see Cardiff - Holyhead and Manchester - Llandudno.

According to Mike Bagshaw Commercial Director of ATW the Sept timetables are six days a week in his spin to the draft timetable Mon/Fri, so why the shuttles on Saturday? although the draft for Saturdays has not been released to stakeholders, so you make an interesting comment, can you tell us more about Saturdays at the Happy Valley.

The latest I have is that some shuttles are running in and out of Llandudno during Monday to Friday. Saturdays still showing the shuttles 12/12/2011 - 7/12/2012.

Will attach following link - if it works!!;)

It's good news about the shuttles, but they're very slow in releasing the new timetables aren't they? Some people need to know times for September by now.

Consultation for timetables is out until August 24th to stakeholders, This is due to ATW not consulting previous, WG have insisted ATW must consult before publication, this is due to major changes on the Wrexham,Llandudno lines.

So nothing concrete until consultation is over, ATW only have themselves to blame on this one.

ATW have, of course, fouled up on T-12. People are not yet able to make reservations on some services for September.
