Hi all,

Am just curious about this, how often would you say LU recruits for trainee drivers?

Been watching there site for some time, but haven't seen anything. Being a train driver is something I've always wanted to do since I've been little. :)

from what I can tell they NEVER advertise for trainee drivers (or Train Operators as they are called) from the street. They did do it once a fair while a go, but they tend to promote from within now. I believe the best way to do it now would be to join as a station assistant and work your way to it.

Someone may come and correct this...

Yep a few years ago I looked into the role. The last time they advertised externally was 2008 - but since then as mentioned they only recruit internally. It's quicker cheaper and obviously successful enough that they haven't needed to look outside the circle.

Looking at your location you might be over the 1 hour travel time to work

Never. Last round of internals is in process. If that fails they open it up again (to internals only). Agreement with unions back in 2008.

Cheers all, will start looking at station assistant jobs. :)

So, I am just asking... As I am planning on moving back.

You don't have to work for LU - you can be anywhere in TfL to apply. In the last recruitment drive several TfL managers completely unconnected to LU became drivers. If shift work suits you it can help work-life balance compared with a management job, while still being on good money.:D

Hi, Don't want to spoil the party but the reality is you have to get into TFL first, when you look at vacancies they're mainly for high profile positions, rarely are there openings for us ordinary oiks, when there are, they seem to be snapped up pronto (me thinks internally), if you are lucky enough to get in at ground level you then have to wait till after probation, then wait for Driver vacancy. As they are already looking at driverless trains it could be a very long wait.

The drivers position was just advertised internally and will be again come September some believe. The same goes for CSA positions.

And you don't have to wait to after probation to put an application in, just to start the job, and considering the whole process (including training) takes over 6 months you can apply from day 1.

Furthermore; driverless trains are a VERY long way off. With so many safety aspects to consider, and also the fact that half of the tube stock is only half way through its 50 year life span (some not even that), it'll be a long time coming!
