Hi.

Can anyone tell me more about this working? I saw a class 66 with a short rake of blue tankers and two what looked like translation MK1 coaches approaching Kilmarnock station at aprox 11am ish today. I was just leaving Morrisons store which is next door to Wabtec.

Thanks. :D

You know that's really funny you've posted this, I was literally just about to start a thread about the exact same thing... except...

I saw your mystery '66, complete with blue tankers and translation coach in Yoker Depot of all places (approx, 5.15pm). The translation coach was lined up with a (refurbished) class 334 - but I'm not reading into that.

I'd also point out that there were staff visible in orange hi-vis, which is uncommon, at Yoker Depot both in the morning rush hour (before the mystery '66 arrived), and in the evening rush hour (after the '66 arrived).

I would love to know why it was there, I pass Yoker Depot every day (often multiple times) and haven't ever seen anything in it aside from the usual EMU's that run N Clyde and Argyle Lines!

HAHA, got there first, Well tomorrow - actually - today :D I will be around the Strathclyde network as I am using a Daytripper (used this ticket so many times now love it) so I'll look out for any activity when I get to my home station Kilmarnock, and its a lovely day today so I just might take some picies with my super dupa HTC Evo 3D (not in 3d but would be interesting) thanks for the info everybody and when we used to visit my our relatives before I moved up to Scotland we used to stay at my Gran's who just happened to stay near Yoker depot so I used to go along to see what was there, at that time it was class 303 and 314's before class 320's took over, remember loving the sea of orange and black in the Glasgow area with Leyland Atlantean's being the order of the day, and, of coarse we were in the area where the blue and yellow colours of Kelvin Scottish was all the rage, remember thinking how modern the livery looked, I even remember the latter days of the green yallow and I think at that time black replaced the white.
Wow that was a trip down memory lane, anyway, it's a lovely sunny day so I'm going to take advantage of the sun and hopefully take some good shots. Thanks all for you replies. :)

I saw 66733 taking the translators back to Glasgow Works earlier

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU_WRWTsX14&list=UUOiFpMWy9imD7646JOiUJrQ&index=1&feature=plcp

Anyway, 334027 may have been the 334 that went into Kilmarnock this morning

Think your right there cause I saw 66733 parked up in the sidings at Rutherglen minus translation vehicles, I was on the Dalmuir Carstairs train which called at Rutherglen at 17:37. I got the 19:10 ex North Berwick from Carstairs and tried to have a peak to see if the 66 was still there but could not see it.

seem to be following the 66 around those pesky blue tankers as I saw at least one with the 66 when I saw it at Rutherglen earlier! :D

brake force?

thats exactly it...

AIUI the mk1 barrier/translator vehicles used for the moves can not "translate" the brake signals from the loco to the unit...
Due to this, those mini tank wagons were re-activated and are formed in the rake when the 334s are being moved to or from overhaul/refurb/refresh.

this tends to be loco+2x mini tanks+mk1+334xxx+mk1+2x mini tanks with a brake pipe/hose being fed into the 334s cab and run through the unit and out the rear cab to connect the brake systems from the loco and wagons at one end, to the wagons at the rear.

there was mention in a magazine a few months ago, about how an unbraked loco or vehicle has to be offset by 1 or more braked vehicles per unbraked vehicle.

Those pesky blue tankers are actually rather unusual - They were actually built back in the 1960s down in Cardiff (Powell Duffryn) presumably as oil tankers. They were then rebuilt in the 1980s by Procor for the transportation of Nitric Acid, until storage by the then Tiger leasing in the 1990s. Since then, they've been taken over by EG Steele, refurbished and are being leased to GBRF to be used as barrier wagons / brake force runners for the Class 334 transfers from Yorker to Brodie, Kilmarnock.

Some little info for you - Ah, along with CJ's post above i think brings the answers.
