Hi there, I recently heard that the Huddersfield – Stalybridge line will be closed for a week in October/November due to work at Stalybridge. As I commute to my University from Mossley, I was wondering if there is any information in place for alternative travel plans. I'm presuming there will be shuttle busses to Ashton? Before trains go from there, but this could prove quite difficult in the mornings and evening with volumes of passengers etc... I hope there isn't no alternative arrangements at all.

Good luck to them putting on sufficient amount of buses during the half term. I may as well just miss Uni if it's going to be a hassle.

Won't that mean the morning peak services will be quieter because of the lack of school/college pupils.

I imagine some of those on holiday will be put off travelling if the train service is replaced by buses.

I reckon that most of the college traffic during the morning peak on the Leeds-Manchester line is only as far as Huddersfield, so this won't affect the Stalybridge section.

I imagine some of those on holiday will be put off travelling if the train service is replaced by buses.

I certainly plan to work from home or our Dewsbury office for that week (or I might just take a week's leave) rather than adding further to my travel time.

To an extent yes, but a lot of the time I'm in at like 1 or 2, meaning I'd have to get the 10.55 train, or 11.55 etc, and obviously with replacement buses I'll have to go an hour earlier, and those times are busy during half term due to pupils. Tbh the weekly services during half term are still busy in peak times.

The blockade at Stalybridge is from Saturday 27th October to Sunday 4th November 2012 inclusive.

TPE services will run as follows during the weekday daytime:

1 tph Scarborough to Huddersfield
1 tph Hull to Huddersfield
1 tph Middlesbrough to Manchester Victoria not serving Huddersfield
1 tph Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street not serving Huddersfield

The Newcastle to Liverpool service will run as 3 cars. The Middlesbrough to Manchester service will run as 6 cars between York and Manchester as much as possible.

The Middlesbrough service will call additionally at Hebden Bridge, Todmorden & Rochdale to replace a Northern service that will be withdrawn to free up capacity for the diverted TPE services.

The Liverpool service will call additionally at Newton le Willows to connect
with a replacement bus to Warrington Central.

Buses will run Huddersfield to Manchester Airport direct.
Buses will run Huddersfield to Manchester Victoria / Ashton under Lyne call all stations.
I believe there is a plan to run some buses Huddersfield to Guide Bridge / Stockport to connect with trains to Manchester Piccadilly.

There will be no buses Manchester Victoria to Piccadilly / Airport, although some trains early morning / late evening will run through via Salford Crescent.

There is insufficient traincrew & rolling stock to provide services between Liverpool and Manchester via Warrington Central, although it is hoped to run some peak hour services on this route. The initial plan was for a Northern service to be diverted that way, instead of using the chat moss route, but I have not seen confirmation of this.

As regards it taking place during half term, my view is that this is a bad idea. While the morning and late afternoon peak may be slightly quieter due to less school / college traffic, the daytime off peak traffic will be a lot busier than normal, which will cause problems. Eg, the daytime semi fast Northern service along the Calder Valley (the one being withdrawn) is very quiet during the day during term time, but is very busy during the day during school holiday time.

So avoid EMT and the peak time CLC stoppers that week unless essential!

Having viewed the Sunday Timetable when trains are replaced by buses from Huddersfield to Manchester Victoria, why are the Manchester Airport trains showing a stop at Huddersfield when they can't pass through Stalybridge?

As one train an hour is reversing at Huddersfield to go via Brighouse and Rochdale to Victoria. The other LDS-MCV is going direct via Brighouse, bypassing Huddersfield.

Would it not have made more logic to provide a bus to either Brighouse, Halifax or Hebden Bridge from Huddersfield than reverse a train at Huddersfield?

I can see this getting complicated and difficult, i feel sorry for the people who will have to nput up on these blockades, i can see there being hell on the caldervale line that week, especially with overcrowding if that is where the diverts are going

A trade-off between looking after manchester-york passengers and looking after huddersfield passengers (going east or west).

Also I can imagine that for an equivalent hudd-manc service that 50 coaches could well be needed - none left to go to Brighouse!

Why no buses to Man Picc? I like the idea of serving Stockport instead though, although the M60 can be a cow when it gets busy.

"Tickets valid for use on Metrolink"?

And the Eastern side of the M60 that they're looking at using isn't usually that bad, especially now they've finished the resurfacing work.

It's between Junctions 18 and 12 CCW Morning Peak and 5 to 15 CW Evening Peak that are the worst sections. Being a car park between 15 and 18 and 6 and 12 respectively....

The Eastern section has improved massively since the widening, southern section isn't too bad, but the M56 between 3A and the M60 is quite bad...
