Best to move to another carriage. I wonder why it is that nobody ever plays good music loudly? Perhaps metalheads have respect :D

You've never sat next to me in traffic on the M60 then, with Elgar and Mozart blearing out on the stereo and drowning out the boy racers' very poor music...

(My old car was set up in sleeper configuration for sound, you'd never know just how much was in it...)

Except when you're on a 153 working on its own - happened to me a few times. The most notable was on the Robin Hood Line, where repeated requests from the guard were ignored, then when removal from the train was threatened the situation suddenly resolved itself.

I always test my headphone volume to make sure others cannot hear it, by taking them out of my ears and holding them away from me. If I can hear the music, it's too loud. I also wonder why it's never good music people play loudly!

You have a point there, its always that awful boom boom, MC'ing, big fish little fish cardboard box cack that's always being played excessivly loud on the train or upstairs at the back on the bus.

I did however have somebody on my train playing Dropkick Murphys at full blast.....

Me and my friends are not your stereotypical 18 year olds - we love 60s, 70s and 80s hits. Having said that, we don't play it out loud.

This is always a controversial issue though and quite an interesting one. If you liked the particular style of music, would you moan if it was loud? I don't think you would, I know I wouldn't. The only reason we commuters don't like loud music is because it's often a style we don't like.

In your position though, I sympathise. Would have moved very obviously as already suggested!

Unfortunately not!

That's what I do, being too cowardly to ask them to turn it down. Moreso if I were in the OP's shoes.

Maybe, maybe not. It could be in the quiet zone, it could be that one has a headache or that it's rude even if the music is good (which is rarer than getting sonic or tails at the end of act signpost on the 8 bit version of sonic 2!)
Even so the sound quality of many phones/cheap headphones can make anything sound awful at high volume.

What was amusing is that someone on the train at BHI was playing some generic hip hop crap when dozens of people from the Rammstein gig at the NEC boarded, never seen it switched off so quickly

Awwr, and since that car is now a cube of rust there isn't much chance of you seeing that until I get my next one sorted, and I don't think I'll be getting that until I get a significant payrise at work...

Living without at the moment...

Either way, I have been known to have good music on loud on trains, but I have proper headphones that don't leak sound out into the carriage..

But equally, thanks to a rather eclectic taste I also have several other genres of music on my phone that I like to listen to, everything from nice slow Elgar such as one of his serenades all the way through to 240bpm speedcore from the likes of Azarel and Quick Brown Fox...

Like this:

This:

But then also things like this:

and this:

One day someone will work out what kind of music I like, today will not be that day as this is only a sample of about 5% of the genre's currently stored on my phone ;)

I disagree. I don't want to hear anyone else's music no matter what they're playing.

Quite so. I'm normally listening to my own favourites on my iPod when I'm travelling - I really don't want to listen to anyone else's.

A couple of months ago, I was sitting next to someone on a bus who decided to treat everyone to his choice of music. I rummaged in my bag, found a spare pair of earphones and passed them to him; it worked!

Agree too.

Whether your'e in a quiet carriage or not, no-one should be playing music out loud.

And there's no excuse for wearing earphones that leak noise, when there are plenty available that don't. If anything, the tshk-tshk-tshk from earphones is more annoying than being subjected to music out of a decent-quality speaker.

I had to share a first-class carriage on VT from COV-EUS a couple of weeks ago with a couple who thought it was acceptable to watch a DVD with the music coming from the laptop speakers rather than wearing headphones with a splitter.

Unless the perpertrator looks particularly scary, I always ask people to turn the music down to a level where other people can't here it. Mostly people are embarrassed and apologetic as they didn't realise their music could be heard. Occasionally, I get an abusive response, at which point, I try and move to a quieter seat.

The latter group of people are nearly always playing modern r'n'b. So that is a good indicator about approaching someone if you're concerned at how they'll respond.

We Brits are generally too willing to tut but not so willing to take any action. We should all be more Victor Meldrew like and confront those guilty of anti-social behaviour, imho.

There are bylaws that cover playing music on a train, if they ignore a polite request to turn the music off / put in headphones, then a request to see their written permission to play it on the train usually works (or confuses them enough!)

Also worth asking for their PRS licence which is required for any public broadcast of music.

iPods and iPhones come with awful earphones that leak a lot of sound.

I was just about to say this. The main culprit is Apple and their sh*t earphones. They just blast sound everywhere in that horrible tinny treble tone that only comes from these things.

When one buys an apple product just bin those trashy white things, and buy a decent set of buds. Sennheiser or Bose if you have the cash, but if not, any £10 set from Tesco will be a massive improvement for your listening pleasure and also your fellow passengers.

Conversely - had a W Coast trip last week in 1st . and there were 3 under 5 year olds exhausted and fretfull with caring and equally tired parents.

This is where an IPOD is a godsend!

Don't get me going, this is a big bugbare for me, I often avoid travelling on public transport around school kicking out time, as I get so annoyed when they play their chavvy rap music through the speakers of their phones. 9/10 the phone in question is a Blackberry, I use a Blackberry but don't see the need to play my music at full blast so everybody can share it.

I wouldn't mind if it was decent music.

That's the whole point! The adverts are targetted to the content of the page you're reading.

I've got adverts for the London School of Business and Finance :?

I've often thought of blasting out some revenge Van Halen but the sort of people who sit there blasting their own crap aren't always the friendliest looking.
