Best to move to another carriage. I wonder why it is that nobody ever plays good music loudly? Perhaps metalheads have respect

Funny should say this - the loudest I have ever heard anyone playing music on a train was a youngish girl listening to Iron Maiden, however despite there being plenty of seats she had decided to close herself off at the end of the carriage and wasn't disturbing anyone! I only heard the tunes when I left the carriage to get off myself. She had it loud enough that I was able to join in singing "Wasted Years" with her! :D

As has also been pointed out - Apple should be done for crimes against Humanity for being allowed to create those awful white things they supply with iPods/iPhones. If I can hear the tsst, tsst, tsst from iPhone headphones, despite wearing my Sennheiser noise isolating earbuds AND the perpetrator sitting two rows further down the carriage from me, then there is clearly a problem!

For me what ruins most of my uk and some euro public transport journeys is selfish noise pollution.

The tinny blast from mobile phones, sibilant beats from cheap headphones ( apple are a particular culprit here), loud mouthed people ( these range from pathetic annoying chavs in 2nd class to obnoxious braying businessmen in 1st) and the incessant pervasive rattle of laptop keyboards.

A decent pair of low leakage personal headphones is the best defence, sony noise cancellers or bose are my choice although there are many others.

Of course what we really need is noisier trains and buses rather than the hermetically sealed triple glazed sardine cans we have now - try listening to R+B on a speeding br mk1 coach with the windows open, a first gen dmu, a Bristol RE or a Leyland national :)

I've noticed abroad that people seem to be more considerate in compartment stock too.

I'll go get my anti nostalgia and grumpy old git pills now..................

If I was in the Quiet coach, then I'd use my earphones.

There's nothing stopping me from watching Robot Chicken or American Dad or Eddie Izzard with the volume on in every other coach. I know when something is loud, and what shows include profanity - and I make sure that I don't make it uncomfortable to others.
I've had people sit next to me to watch some things, I don't get bothered by it.

I don't understand why people take such umbrage to matters like this. Some of it is music snobbery - I prefer Blur over Oasis, and then suddenly you're public enemy number 1.
Some of it is ''higher-than-thou'' behaviour which clearly shouldn't exist in this modern century. I had a 4 inch mohawk, and I regularly travel First Class - Cue the looks and tuts from toffs and other false-dignitaries. I take my jacket off, revealing a suit and tie. Does that make me different to them? Some of you are the same as them - Get off your high horse and understand that it is Public Transportation. If you wanted to travel from A to B, you could have gone by car/taxi.

I'm not protecting the whole ASBO-cum-hoodie affair, but where do you draw the line from acceptable to unacceptable? Someone mentioned a girl playing Iron Maiden at the bottom of a carriage - Is that wrong? Should she be tarred with the same brush?

You all sound like you fell out of the same private school that the Tories went to. Relax - Let people be what they are. Social Animals.

As an aside to the OP-

I'm guessing the annoying music players were female? If so their comments make a little bit more sense....

They were just jealous :)

iPods and iPhones come with awful earphones that leak a lot of sound.

Aye, they're utterly awful. My samsung came with earphones that are perfectly loud enough when they're in- but even at full blast, if you take them out, barely a noise can be heard.

As much as I love Iron Maiden playing anything out loud or just being loud in general is not acceptable on trains or buses. It's just inconsiderate and what may be good music to some people is bad music to others, so if you can't please everyone don't bother at all.

They also need PPL as well as PRS!!

Best version of Bach on youtube

Lovely that someone chooses to listen to Bach on his headphones, I don't really like the guy behind the performer, pulling his stops. I'd sure JS Bach would not approve. Bach would have had a youngster pumping his organ. The instruments bellows that is.

If you like Bach and would like something really noisy to listen too try Respighi's Orchestration of the Passagalia and Fugúe found here. It gets really loud towards the end and Respighi really keeps faith with Bach's original.

If you want to have a few moments to really cherish some good music then try this music just after you have passed Dawlish Warren and hit the sea coast. Get the timing right and it's pure magic. You'd be wowing loud enough to really have your fellow passengers wondering what you are listening to. It's the first movement only but after the opening trumpet fanfare you'd have goosebumps for sure.

Playing music aloud on a train is not big and it's not clever.

Would have been better if you'd visited Charlotte the Harlot <D

Me and my friends are not your stereotypical 18 year olds - we love 60s, 70s and 80s hits. Having said that, we don't play it out loud.

This is always a controversial issue though and quite an interesting one. If you liked the particular style of music, would you moan if it was loud? I don't think you would, I know I wouldn't. The only reason we commuters don't like loud music is because it's often a style we don't like.

I don't agree. The first reason I (and I would imagine most people) don't like the music from other people's headphones is that the sound coming out is usually so poor quality as to be unrecognizable - just an annoying thump-thump of the drums. So whether it happens to be a style that you would have liked is irrelevant.

But the second reason is that people should have a choice whether they want to listen to music. If person A plays music through their headphones so loudly that other people in the carriage can hear it, then A is not giving them a choice: He's forcing them to listen to his (or her)music - which is incredibly inconsiderate.

Personally, if someone was playing music that I happened to like, and the sound quality was gooe enough to actually enjoy it, then I might well be happy, but the person still shouldn't have been playing the music so loudly.

I'm with you there. People playing music loud enough for other people to hear is my biggest bugbear that makes train journeys less enjoyable than they would have been.

I always test my headphone volume to make sure others cannot hear it, by taking them out of my ears and holding them away from me. If I can hear the music, it's too loud.

Me2. Really wish that could become the normal behaviour that people generally expect to do.

That hit the nail on the head. Mobile phones speakers are just as bad as the cheap earphones too.

Once some people across the aisle were playing loud music, I responded with the Eduard Khil megahit "I Am Glad, 'Cause I'm Finally Returning Back Home". ;)

Conversely - had a W Coast trip last week in 1st . and there were 3 under 5 year olds exhausted and fretfull with caring and equally tired parents.

This is where an IPOD is a godsend!

On Tuesday I went to Stratford Int from Faversham, not a very long journey. However the train seamed to be full of little darlings that parents were taking into London. Two kids sitting in the row of seats behind me kicking the seats in front of them, playing with the table and talking loudly. Across from me another two who hitting each other. Then the parents a few rows in front just ignoring them.

Well its summer and I guess long suffering parents have had enough and are now counting the days until school is back.

I don't listen to music much but love podcasts and audiobooks. So the headphones came out and I attempted to block any sound from the kids. The headphones I was using were the ones that came with my iPhone so to kill the sound of the kids the volume had to be high. Not sure the rest of my fellow passengers liked to listen to a podcast on rumours of the next iPhone but hay ho. The alternative would not of made me popular with the parents.

As an aside, don't carriages have CCTV in them? And if so, surely kicking (and so potentially damaging) the seats ought to attract the attention of the train operating company? Or doesn't anyone monitor the CCTV images?

Not live so I doubt they'd do much to identify and trace the 'offenders' later on, if they bothered to pull a random bit of footage.

Loud in ear music or bores talking VERY loudly about something rather uninteresting(and yes that can include trains at times)

I know which id prefer.

In fact on me way in to work tonight I was regaled with people talking about their new car and what was good about it to the counter arguement of someone who happens to have a 3 series beemer.I could even hear them over me walkman and it wasnt nice for sure

You should try having a conversation while serving people on tills about when someone penetrated airport security and threw a suitcase bomb at an aircraft before a police sniper kneecapped them, even more surprised how many customers never notices ;)

PS: I was on a till in Terminal Two Departures ;)

It's more fun when I'm speaking with my better half about the finer points of engineering principals for rail or road vehicles, aircraft, photography or electronics, you've never seen so many clueless looking people outside of G-A-Y...

And I have to talk loud, because the Cummins QSK-19F engine under me is too loud, especially combined with the aux compressor on corroding spring damper mounts that's rattling ;)

Actually me and me mate were coming back from Newcastle a couple of week ago and after a few shandys, as you do, we were talking a bit loudly about music and the fella accross from us frowned, then got involved with us on the same subject all the way home. Never laughed so much in all me life mind.. Thank god the carriage was kind of empty

I've been lurking for a while now, but I just had to sign up to post a response to this thread. This is something that really annoys me, a quiet hum of music from the person directly next to me is acceptable, but when you can hear them from the other end of the carriage no matter what they are playing it's annoying.

Mind you, I wonder what the conductors response would be to a string quartet starting playing directly beside the perpetrator with live music. It worked in Covent Garden so why not on a train? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BujoOxjB3b4
