Unless specifically referenced in relation to the terms and conditions of a ticket (and accessible to the purchaser), the contents of The Manual do not form part of the conditions of carriage and this will not change when it is available to view to the general public.

yes, a London to Dover Priory SOS/SOR plus the Port Tax. AFAIK PRIV Railsail fares don't exist on that route (open to be told otherwise)
Quite up for doing this journey in the spring when the weather's a little milder but I'm a bit confused about this ticket, sorry.

Is it this ticket for the PRIV option? This includes HS1 but i'm confused about the ferry part of the journey. Is it a case of showing up with my staff/PRIV card and then I only pay the port tax to P&O, with no foot passenger fare to pay?

Apologies!

We only travelled home from Northern Ireland on a Port Tax ticket and all we paid was the port tax and used our first group boxes on Scotrail. I personally (unless im wrong about railsail) would buy the PRIV to Dover then make my own way to the Docks and pay the Port Tax (when I did Stena from Belfast to Stranraer I rang them to reserve a port tax ticket, I presume P&O will be the same). Normally I buy a FIP Eurostar ticket for my trips to the Continent but I'm tempted to Ferry it in the Summer if I get a chance!

I had no issues buying two "London Terminals to Calais route Stena P&O" return tickets for 6 April from Kings Cross' advanced tickets booking office today. A short debate about validity of Network Cards, but that was sorted.

I know Calais isn't Monaco, but it's a day out and it's the fun of the trip that counts for me!

my view is that the Manual could be considered "notices and other publications issued by the Train Companies whose trains you are entitled to use" as below quoted from the NRCoC:

It doesn't say that, though. It says:

(c) the conditions which apply to Electronic Tickets, Smartcards, other devices used for storing Electronic Tickets and certain types of reduced and discounted fare tickets as set out in the notices and other publications issued by the Train Companies whose trains you are entitled to use; and

This bit says 'trains you are entitled to use' but refers only to Smartcards, E-tickets and reduced fare tickets.

This bit:

(d) the conditions set out in the notices and other publications issued by another person if the ticket enables you to use any of their goods or services.

Is about other companies goods or services so presumably relates to shipping companies etc.

I am considering going to France for the week in July and might get this ticket to get to Calais, hire a car there and drive to our destination instead of undergoing the cost of driving to Dover and the cost of the ferry. Works well in my mind's eye on the way there. Is there any good return offer from SNCF?

Where are you travelling from. A hire car for a week is looking at about £200-300 surely wont cost you that much to get there, and a dover calais with car is only around £70 return

We're coming from London.

I find our car to be quite uneconomical and reckon it could be cost neutral to do it via train because the hire car would have a more modern engine than ours and use less fuel. I suppose it all depends on where we intend to travel to once we get to France. We're still in the planning stage but looking to get a gite.

Would this be viable on 28 may:

Tamworth- Euston
Dep: 6:11
Arr: 8:11
Advance: £4.65

Walk to Charing Cross (Possibly on the tube)

Charing Cross - Calais
Dep: 9:13
Arr: 11:02
Day return: £22.35 ( I believe)

Walk to the Ferry terminal (or the bus depending on what time the train gets in)
Get the 12:05-14:35 Ferry.
Return on the 18:50-19:20

Dover - St Pancras
Dep: 19:45
Arrive: 20:54

Euston - Tamworth
Dep: 22:00
Arr: 23:15
Advance: £4.95

Total cost £31.95 - With Railcard. (excluding HS1)

Quick question:
Would the London Terminal- Calais ticket cover from Euston on the tube to charing cross? or would I have to buy a single?

AFAIK they are only available from Southeastern ticket offices. I read it somewhere in the manual but can't access at the moment. If no-one else finds it I'll find a reference to it when I'm next at work.
There was an article in the current issue of Today's Railways Europe about this.

No, it would not

However the overpriced Woking ones etc. may well do, but it most likely cheaper to PAYG then. Certainly from here it was far cheaper to split tickets at London Terminals than somewhere logical like Woking.

I don't know how long it takes to walk from Euston - Charing Cross but I would have though 9 min would be pushing it, even for a same terminal change. It also might not meet the minimum connection time, Which is only 5 mins a Euston according to this now out of date timetable.

I think its like a 30 main walk or so, I did check Google maps but can't remember the time now

If you want to avoid HS1 you would need to return from Calais earlier to catch the 22:00 from Euston to Tamworth. If you travel on HS1 you can catch the 19:45 from Dover Priory to St. Pancras (arr. 20:54) or the 19:58 changing at Ashford International (arr. 21:21). You could also arrive earlier at Dover Priory by using High Speed 1 from St. Pancras.

Euston to St. Pancras takes around 10 minutes on foot. The minimum connection time is 38 minutes. Train companies are obliged to honour your ticket for a later train or if necessary put you up in a hotel or send you by taxi if your previous train is delayed and the minimum connection time is met.

Euston to Charing Cross takes around 45 minutes on foot or a few minutes on the London Underground. The minimum connection time is 44 minutes. A Zone 1 single is £4.50 in cash, £2.10 on Oyster or £1.40 with a Railcard on Oyster at off-peak times (not touching in between 0630 and 0930 or 1600 and 1900 Monday-Friday).

could I just pay the hs1 supplement for the way back then? if so any idea on price?
I assume the outbound journey isn't using hs1 then.

suppose I could go to St pancreas on the return, didn't realise they were so close! together!

Given the 45 min check-in for the boat and the distance to the station if you are lucky then it may work both ways with a cab but not by bus or foot. The return is very dodgy.

Could someone with local knowledge suggest if the itinerary would be reasonable if the OP used HS1 on the outbound journey (arriving around an hour earlier) and planned to take the 19:58 from Dover connection instead of the 19:45?

I could:

take an earlier ferry - 17:55- 18.25
take a later train to London
take a later train from London - 1:30am departure but spend 3 hrs at Milton keynes

20:45 from Dover - St pancreas only leaves 9 mins connection time to go between stations which I think is a bit tight. if possible depending on how late the train is.

Don't forget this is a day return fare only and P&O European Ferries only allow hand luggage for people travelling on day trips. This doesn't seem to be as rigourously enforced as if you were flying say but I was questioned as to why I was taking a suitcase (was to fill with wine!)

I have done this trip a couple of times. Not sure that you would get the 1945 train from a ferry arriving at 1920.

Foot passengers disembark via gangway and are transferred to the arrivals hall by bus. Often there is just 1 bus for all the foot passengers so the bus waits for everybody to disembark first. Then you either need a shuttle bus to the station waiting for you or take a taxi if the bus isnt there. Usually takes 40-60 minutes in my experience.

I usually time the ferry to dock approx an hour

If they don't use the gangway then expect to wait onboard for another 30 minutes while they clear the boat of vehicles. And I found that the last bus to the station doesn't wait for the boat passengers, and there were no waiting taxis.

Train companies are obliged to honour your ticket for a later train or if necessary put you up in a hotel or send you by taxi if your previous train is delayed and the minimum connection time is met.
That's not necessarily true - it depends on the cause of the delay, I'm sure there were some people left stranded in bad weather this year.
If the ferry is late (which is fairly likely in my experience), I doubt anybody will offer assistance.

Walk to St Pancras. (15 mins)

St Pancras- Calais
Dep: 9:10
Arr: 10:20
Day return: £22.35 ( I believe)

Walk to the Ferry terminal (30 mins)

Get the 12:05-14:35 Ferry.
Return on the 17:55-18:25

Dover - St Pancras
Dep: 19:45 - (19:58)
Arrive: 20:54 - (21:21)

Walk to Euston (15 mins)

Euston - Tamworth

1825 arrival for a 1945 train is more realistic. You will prob arrive at Dover Priory Station around 1910/1920 and the HS1 will usually be waiting for you on the middle platform.

Just bear in mind that you may have issues using HS1 as the manual now explicitly say HS1 is not included, though I doubt the tickets have been updated to reflect this, so in reality it should be permitted still assuming Dover Priory via HS1 is still a permitted route and if it's not someone's seriously cacked up.

if I pay the extra supplement would it be valid then?

it only takes 1hr 09 or so on NRE planner

Sorry if this has already been covered, but where are you intending to buy this ticket? Again, sorry if I haven't been paying proper attention, but I thought the lore was: that it is sold by SE ticket offices, and (random?) others including Kings Cross and Stratford International, but neither FCC nor East Midlands at St Pancras? Certainly FCC at Blackfriars claimed to me they couldn't/wouldn't sell it, even when I pointed out the preserved destination stones to Paris Vienna etc!

I was assuming you could get it a St pancras, I will having to send out a few emails to check where I can get them. I believe this is why I originally chose Charing cross.
will see what they say its on a small detour via the tube anyway.

can't find a customer services email :(

I bought my ticket at Kings cross next door showing a picture of the ticket and quoting the code for Calais. Although the staff member had never issued it before he did successfully with that info. (including the network card discount before 10am, I travelled with HS1 without difficulty) See my trip report in the trip section. I should have tried the same method at the FCC office in St Pancras!

Just to note that there are now instructions for staff on how to issue the control tickets on their respective TIS - just send you friendly booking clerk in that direction if they shrug their shoulders and say don't know guv.

So there's no excuses now for people to upset the French by not having one to give them. ;)
