I've worked on a Preserved Railway for over a couple of years now and I've never heard of any discounts we get on NR? :?

It only applies to certain lines and you have to be an employee, not a volunteer.

We get an annual free ticket which looks like: -
50fb0e82.jpg

When we placed a berth reservation on the Fort William sleeper in 2005 (1st class), it showed up on the slips as being free. Was this correct?

Almost certainly not - the person making the reservation might have got confused. Unless you have a free sleeping berth pass issued by Scotrail you're supposed to pay for it. The only exception to this is for staff with Gold Status Passes and you have to be very exalted to get one of those - TOC director or equivalent.

Its only certain preserved railways (about 8 I think) which had reciprocal arrangements with br at the formation of atoc.
You have to be paid for a minimum of 15 hours per week. Volunteers dont qualify.

Gizmogle - I think I saw you at Havenstreet at about 1300 this afternoon (Weds) - you were on the Smallbrook-bound train as I was heading in the other direction. I was about to come over and say "you are Gizmogle and I claim my £5" but you probably wouldn't have had a clue what I was talking about - and, anyway, your train was about to leave. If it was you, you were bang on schedule. Hope the week is going well.

If you have not visited specific areas, then you may be better off purchasing some of the smaller regional Rail Rover tickets
I would recommend this if you plan to visit each and all of the rail lines in Scotland, as that will save you at least £50 a day, which you can then put towards some cheap overnight stays (since there are no longer any overnight services within Scotland)
You should be able to cover all of the Scottish lines in 3 days, so purchasing a 4 in 8 days Scotland Rover would be the best option
This will also allow you to travel by Caledonian Sleeper to/from Scotland at a reduced rate, and direct from Crewe as well!

The person I'm travelling with has purchased a discounted all line rover ticket, but I'm on a priv as Tom said, so I'm just filling in boxes instead :)

You still coming up this way tomorrow? Unless something terrible happens at work (like me having to do some work :p) I should be able to come and say hello.

Many, many, many years ago a well-known national newspaper sent one of their people out to major holiday resorts at about this time of year. Readers, who had to be clutching a copy of that day's paper, had to challenge this individual with something like the words "You are Mirrorman and I claim my £5", which was quite a lot of money in those days. I can't remember how they were supposed to identify him and I wonder how many innocent passers-by got accosted by Daily Mirror readers demanding to be given their £5 notes.

Real Radio in Glasgow did that with the "Real Radio Fugitive". Someone even asked me. Completely random and OT.

At least RR gave a cryptic clue that lead people to a rough geographical area.

PS, looks like a good plan Gizmogle.

Oh the Real Radio Fugitive...I remember that in South Wales too. Nice sum of money was to be won I believe. It was a thing at work for some time that too. Got sick of people going "Are you the Real Radio Fugitive?", especially when it was always on the radio too!

Hail All! <D
Not exactly related to ALR travel, but something quite amusing anyway...

There have been occasions in the past where I have actually caught a few hours sleep in overhead luggage racks on heavily delayed night services. It's not the most comfortable or cleanest way to grab 40 winks, but if (Like me) you're thin and light enough for an overhead rack to accommodate ye safely, it's better than trying to sleep in the hard, low-backed seats (Think of the ones on the old 455s) that ye often find on stoppers!:toothy10:

Farewell... <D

Meh, some problems with lateness and lazyness lol
Yesterday the Buxton to Stockport train was 15 late so we had to cut out some stuff, and then today, we completely slept through our 0530 alarm  so we've had almost another 5hrs sleep because of the infrequent service on the HoW :D Hurrah!
We met Craig too :) and he was dead quiet...and I was dead quiet...so yeah...big quiet mess :D lol

Hey there! When you thinking of doing the Conwy Valley line? Is it THIS Thursday? I could come down to Junction for a ride, then back home, all for just £2.90

I would just like to take the time to completely slag off FGW :)
I'm bloody sick of them! Seriously. Only two of my FGW journeys EVER have been on time and pleasent. They weren't really that pleasent though, cause one of them was full of litter as the cleaner decided only to pick up a coffee cup or two from each coach and leave the rest of the crap lying there.
They're always late with me. Always. I have to make a backup plan everytime I travel with them because the majority of the time we will be late by more than 10 minutes.
We have an entire two days travelling First Great Western and I wouldn't mind betting that we can't do our original plan due to late runnings.
Thankyou and goodnight...or morning :p

I can predict that your branchline trains will run very much on time. The only stuff that lets them down is HIgh Speed who are always stuck in queues outside Reading. So next time FGW are late blame Network Rail.

The only reason they're stacked up outside Reading is because NR are unwilling to use a second platform the FGW HSS services in both directions ...

There is no reason why they couldn't use the up main as well as down main platforms for FGW HSS at a quiet time. It's also the dodgy dispatch that is present at Reading which doesn't help issues. On the Pembroke Dock HST we arrived bang on time and departed 3 minutes late as the dispatch were rather slow at doing their job, TBH.

Slow dispatch is present all over GW. Newport is the notorious example (blame ATW for that though). Chippenham is also pathetic in that department. I've been on HSTs for FOUR minutes (one was enough) or more there before due to dispatch and/or guards running from one end of the train to the other for no reason. Doors all closed properly, no passengers waiting to board, 30 minutes late, everyone ready to go. No chance of going yet...Don't know why some of the dispatch there insist on running the full length of the platform to check doors (there are at least two of them doing the job), but they do and contribute massively to delays (signal was clear too). Bath's lot get on with the job far better.

If FGW didn't stop every blooming HST at Reading and had some crack expresses to the South West running fast from London to Exeter again then the issues wouldn't be so bad. Reading just needs complete demolition (the station, I do not refer to the city itself as I've never been into Reading yet) and a complete rebuild with better focus on high speed services.

Is it not better that the doors are definately closed and you're a wee bit late than if the doors are flying open at 125mph?

The only flaw with that idea is that Reading contributes more passengers to the network than all the stations west of Newbury and Bristol put together.

Well instead of the evening through HST to Carmarthen calling at Reading and not Didcot or Swindon before Bristol Parkway, it should revert to first stop Didcot or Swindon at least.

Does anyone know if an ALR has the equivalent validity of NR tickets on LU?

for example, a NR ticket from harrow & wealdstone to queen's park, is valid on any train - including bakerloo.

I assume the answer is "yes" unless there is some documentation to the contrary?

I would assume not given that it specifically states:

"NOT available for travel on Eurostar, Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Harlington and Heathrow, London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Croydon Tramlink, Private Railways and on shipping services."

A good question. The Fares Manuals state:

Subject to tickets being valid between the appropriate stations or for the zones shown, National Rail singles and returns are valid on LU/DLR services as shown below:

...
between Harrow & Wealdstone and Queens Park
...

Note that the concession applies to singles and returns only. Season tickets would also be valid if they are Travelcards, but it does look as though ALRs are not covered.

I think it's a question of which rule 'trumps' the other rules, as there are quite a few conflictions.

Firstly, when it refers to 'singles and returns', surely they are not escluding seasons? do they really think a harrow & wealdstone to queen's park commuter should be restricted to the less frequent Silverlink trains?

Secondly, what does it mean by 'not valid on LU'? as it can have 2 (or perhaps more) possible meanings. it could mean 'no travel on any LU train even when it is permitted for other NR-ticket holders' (which seems ridiculously unfair) OR it could mean 'no travel on LU except where NR tickets are accepted as listed in FM section L' (which would seem fair).
