The answer was Culrain to Invershin when I was a lad, is it still?

Comes up a lot. Answer is Ty Glas-Birchgrove on the Coryton line - 17 chains.

17 chains for £1.60 single! What a rip-off!

Lichfield City to Lichfield Trent valley is less than a third of the price - and how much longer?

I'd imagine there are plenty of locations where you can see the next station from the one you are standing at. You can see Denham from Denham Golf Club (and vice versa) but the stations are virtually a mile apart.

You can see Codsall from Bilbrook (though not so obvious the other way round as the bright red footbridge makes the former station more distinguishable). I don't think that state of affairs is that unusual.

How many other very short journeys are there that no-one would realistically make?

A couple of Local ones I can think of

Manchester Deansgate- Manchester Oxford Road 29 Chains
Manchester Oxford Road to Manchester Piccadilly 43 Chains
Manchester Victoria to Salford Central 59 Chains
Salford Crescent-Salford Central 80 Chains:D
Liverpool Central to Liverpool James Street 37 Chains

Devonport to Dockyard- 37 chains, which I believe is the cheapest fare in Britain, 80p for a CDS. I presume Rotherhithe to Canada Water on the ELL does not count, as it is technically TFL track, as that is only 17 chains as well.

St Peter's to Sunderland: 28 chains
Sunderland to Park Lane: 25 chains
Farringden to City Thameslink: 32 chains
Newcastle to Manors: 46 chains
Cannon Street to London Bridge: 56 chains
Charing Cross to Waterloo East: 61 chains

But if Railmiles is correct, then we may have a new winner!

City Thameslink to Blackfriars: 14 chains :D

And with an Anytime single costing £2.60, that comes up just shy of £15 per mile!

Not sure if I am correct here but I believe that the shortest service of a terminating service is Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town. Im here, of course, to be proved incorrect :)

surely it is Blackfriars to City Thameslink isnt it?

That's before Blackfriars platforms were re-sited and 4/8 car stop markers moved to the far end of the platforms at both stations. The distance the train travels between the two stations (ie '4/8 car stop marker Blackfriars platform 2 to 4/8 car stop marker City Thameslink platform 1, or vice versa, is probably nearer 30 chains).

You can't make the journey any more, but does anybody have an accurate measurement of Smethwick Galton Bridge to Smethwick West?

I doubt if anyone would make a journey between ANY OF THE STATIONS on the Coryton branch........though maybe someone will prove me wrong!

Probably a lot of shorter ones but loads of stations around here that you can see the platform of the next station from:

Penge West - Anerley
Lewisham - St. John's
Lower Sydenham - New Beckenham
Worcester Park - Motspur Park
Sutton - Cheam

All spring to mind.

I always thought it was Ryde to Ryde Pier and that was the journey people use to buy season tickets for just to get a Network Gold Card.
