Today I saw a 158+156 EMT combination between Stockport and Manchester at around 17:30. I've noticed in another thread it says EMT have loaned a 158 out, has that resulted in any diagrammed 156s on Liverpool-Norwich?

Is that the one loaned to GA, if it is still with them.

GA have no permanent loan 158. They simply use one EMT 158 a day, in the morning to work a Lowestoft run and then in the evening to work a Great Yarmouth run. In between these runs, the unit works to Liverpool.

If it is true that they have loaned out a 158, they deserve to have the franchise removed. As they are using single coach units on ridiculously busy services and leaving people behind and are also having quite a number of cancelations due to train faults.

So many things wrong with that comment...

...especially if it's referring to the 158 that GA use in a morning. How could EMT possibly hope to use it elsewhere in that couple of hours when it'd otherwise be sitting idle in Norwich?

Yes they are loaning out a 158, but it only works some GA runs before/after its EMT diagram starts/finishes in Norwich

And so to the OP, this would not result in 156s on Liverpool to Norwich

SWT has also loaned 158s to FGW and others as well as the Lymington Branch (in a sense). Does that mean Stagecoach deserves to lose that franchise too? This arrangement described makes good use of the unit.

by the first post I (erroneously) presumed that another 158 had been loaned to someone else:|

Remember the use of the 158 each morning on a GA service is a trade-off agreed with DfT which allowed EMT to pull out of the 22.40 Nrw-Cbg & 06.05 Cbg-Nrw. These services where previously operated by Central Trains & didn't fit in with the break up into EMT & XC. It isn't just a loan of a 158. The evening loan for the 19.33 Nrw-Gym is a different story & EMT would have no use for it at that time anyway.

156s occasionally go to Norwich or Liverpool due to short notice issues with the 158 fleet. It doesn't happen very often but it's not particularly unusual.

153's very occasionally appear too. I got a 156 and 153 combo maybe three years ago.

I saw a EMT 158+156 combo at Manchester Piccadilly on Friday when i was waiting for my train back home. Think the EMT service was 16:43 (Picc) to Norwich.

There was indeed an EMT 156 in Norwich last week in place of a 158, I think it may well have been Friday.

It was indeed Friday. 156406 worked the first service from East Mids Parkway and then all the way through to Liverpool and back as far as Chesterfield, where the 158 worked forward to Norwich. Most likely due to stock displacement during the Nottingham blockade.

the 0952 Liverpool to Norwich was formed of 156413 & 156470 as far as chesterfield today, where only 156413 went forward to Norwich.

Well 156415 made it to Norwich this morning attached to the booked 158. Thankfully for GA it will remain here for their use possibly til the end of the Nottingham blockade.

If this is true then this is wonderful news. I've just spotted it at CP and joked it would be nice if it stayed here.

Was it you were given reservations with asterisks instead of seat numbers, people sat in your reserved seats or the reservation labels not put out?

There are always specific seat numbers on 158s. If the trains are delayed particularly at the Liverpool end they won't be put out. I'm sure its only the back two carriages that are reserved on a double 158.

You've seemingly got an obsession with reservations with asterisks

And yes I do frequently travel on this route... EMT are usually good with the reservations in my experience.

is it normally the guard who puts the reservation coupons out... (if so this may be one of the 'additional duties' that they are currently not performing as part of the work to rule)

That's correct. Usually only one unit goes beyond Nottingham so all reservations should be in the through unit.

Lack of tickets being put out on Norwich-Liverpools used to be a real problem but as a frequent user I think they have improved a lot recently (though I haven't used them during the blockade and related "industrial inaction"). It is in any case much less of a problem, west of Nottingham at least, as with a four-car set you are virtually assured of a seat.

Assuming it's an off-peak service that is 4 cars (not 2 cars) and no special event are on. Unless your definition of west of Nottingham only means Sheffield-Nottingham?

With Stockport not having that many direct services to Manchester Oxford Rd, the EMT services finish up being heavily used commuter services on that section. (One of the morning alternatives to the EMT service on that section is a pair of packed Pacers.)

While 4 carriages can easily have all seats filled when sporting events are on in Manchester or Liverpool.

If I've got to be honest, I don't think that many board the 0825 EMT service at Stockport towards Manchester. It certainly isn't noticeable through the 4 carriages, not often is there more than 10 standing in the carriage I sit in, 2nd from front in a 4 car set. No hope of getting Hazel Grove passengers on at all if just 2 carriages turns up, never mind Stockport.
