I seem to have a lot of random little questions about my priv that aren't really answered on the ATOC website.

So I think it's probably worth making a thread that I can just keep digging up when I have more questions, rather than hijacking everyone elses threads :p

Can my priv be used with my local student card (allowing me to travel for half fare in Derbyshire) to get me CHPRIV tickets?

No, because that's a local authority concession, thus the discount field will have to show LACON rather than CHPRV.

Ah okay. But can I still get the same rate? I assuming not, but I was just wondering

Isn't it good enough to travel for practically nothing in the first place...?

I suppose it depends on the local authority, the SYPTE offers children in possession of a pass standard child fares on all trains within South Yorkshire, and child fares for 16-18 year olds on Northern Rail.

What do you mean, I believe you can either have the Priv rate or whatever the concessionary rate is. Also, I thought you could have free travel with boxes anyway?

Look, I'm not here for arguements. I'm just asking genuine questions, and I don't want all this "at least you have a priv" crap.

Yeah, I can, but I'm tryna save as many boxes as possible by paying on Northern Rail services and stuff like that.
So I have more boxes spare for the longer and what would be more expensive journeys.
Thing is, I'm very, very cheap. I hate spending money. I'm not ungrateful for my priv or anything, as it may come off sometimes. I just really do HATE spending money on anything.

Plus I have to find myself £1,000 for a laptop :p

I wasn't attempting to have an argument, merely to state that is it worth the hassle to save a tiny amount of money?

But I suppose it's somewhere in the terms and conditions - you'd have to check with your local authority. Most have a clause which states "cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer" - otherwise you could have someone who falls into so many catagories they end up paying practically nothing.

Yeah, fair enough :)
I don't have alot of money at all though, so as much as £3-6 is quite alot for me and can mean that I don't have the money for food or drink if I end up having to buy a ticket.

You mean you've been made to fill in boxes?! :o I don't actually have boxes, but I know someone who always manages to blag free travel with a Priv (no boxes) and has never filled in a NatEx box.

Well, to be honest, I don't tend to fill in boxes unless I'm travelling alot in one day (the ALR trip for example where I used my priv).
But I do get asked sometimes. I had the Virgin ticket checkers at Euston make me fill in a box right there and then with less than a minute before the train left!
There's also a jobsworth on the Buxton trains that asked me the other week to fill in a box, (for Stockport to Buxton :???:) so I asked for a ticket. Was about £1.80 and I payed with a £20 <D He hasn't bothered since lol

Plus I think being a teenager means I get away with less. My dad can get his new priv and not even fill a single box in, and they just smile at him. Whereas I'd most likely get an earful for it.

Hi, I don't know much about privs, so can someone explain what "fill in a box" means? Ta

Well, a priv ticket allows free or discounted travel for railway employees and their dependants and spouse.

The ticket has a number of boxes (upto 20. But obviously a manager gets more boxers than a signaller). Each time you travel for free, you have to date a box with the day and month. Each box is valid for 2 days.

Thanks Gizmogle. Are the boxes up to 20 per month, per year, for ever?

Well, I get 16 boxes.
The priv is valid for 14 months and 30 days. But I usually receive a new one a couple of months before it expires.

So if £3 - 6 is alot for you, if you didn't have that priv would you even bother/be able to go out on trips may i ask?

I think it's more the matter that I'm cheap really. (I think it comes with being northern :p)
But I definately wouldn't be able to afford. But then, if I didn't have the free travel, I wouldn't have gotten into trains.

Which is excellent until an incompetent TOC runs one train late, so you miss a connection, and they refuse to accept your ticket on another service even thought it's entirely their fault...

lol true, i still can get away with child fares at the minute though :D, then probably after christmas going to get me self a Young Persons Railcard :D

A YP Railcard is a fantastic investment. The £8 minimum is rather annoying at the morning peak, which for some reason extends to 10am, but on most services the discount is fantastic.

It's 34% off the standard adult fare at all times. Not most AP or season tickets, although it can be used on some. Before 10am Mon-Fri exc. Bank Holidays and July and August, an £8 minimum fare applies. eg, a £9 ticket is only reduced to £8 but a £30 ticket is still reduced to £20.

Yup, £20 per annum gets you the discount. Living in Aberdeen, you'll find it'll pay for itself very quickly.

Not everyone with a Priv gets free travel across the network from boxes, I don't with a (safeguarded) TfL Priv and nor do (non-safeguarded) TOCNE I believe.
