According to Cannon this camera takes both SD amd mmc cards.
So it's likely you are using an SD card. Which has a lock on it to unlock slide the switch on the left hand side upwards (contacts facing away from you).

Unlock the card, ironically enough! There will probably be a very small switch somewhere on the card (an edge most likely) flick it and try the card again.

If it is the "HC" I am thinking of, it may mean High Capacity - could it be possible that the camera doesn't support it?

How large is the card you are trying to use? Since it appears they came shipped with a 16MB card, it may not support some of the newest, largest ones

This sounds right I had a 1GB card in and it works fine new one is 8 which is smallest in shop. I will have to look for another 1GB Thank you

If you can find a 4gb that should work. 4gb cards are not classed as high capacity cards.

The camera only supports the original SD specification. The only size that Sandisk supply in the UK is 2GB. Amazon Product Link

Yep, that's probably the only 'traditional' SD card which you'll easily find new today. Exactly the one I have, though got it cheaper than listed there.

Agreed. SD cards (without HC or XC) go up to 2gb. That's probably the smallest capacity you will find currently. So that's what to buy and use. 2gb.
