I wanna travel first class (assuming I have to pay full fare for this? NUS cards not accepted? Nor privs?) from Manchester to London and get a Primo breakfast.

Looks like I can only do it on a weekday, and the 0705 seems to be the only train I can catch too.

Not sure on the date yet. But it will be after December 11th in the next week or so after.

Rough prices? Advice?

Thanks :)

Get a ticket to Milton Keynes or Watford, just enough time to eat ya breakkie but not pay London prices. Depends on the timetable tho

Hmm, I guess. Cause I could do that and then use my priv for the rest of the way :) Meaning I wouldn't have to change.

EDIT: Ah, no, can't do it. The only train I can get to Manchester for is an express straight to Euston.

Hmm, see, I wanna go as far as possible first class. Preferrably Manchester/Stockport to Euston.

But yeah, anyway. How are the prices for the 0705 Manchester to London on weekdays?

Really? I will most likely be going somewhere from London, so no need to go back.

What's the best first class service with Virgin West Coast?

The Pendolino Primo Monday to Thursday service is usually very good for the evening meal. I've not done Primo breakfast/afternoon tea before, but when i've had the usual "Non-Primo" Breakfast towards Euston [before 08:30], it's been very good.

IMO the "Fish on Friday" menu isn't good, and when I had an all-day snack on the Thursday before that journey, I actually enjoyed the chicken wraps alot more, than the "Subergine stack".

The Fish has alot to be desired, and is very greasy according to a person I spoke to on the train last week.

TBH The thing which let Primo service down, was the appauling level of service provided by the FC Hosts- They only came through with drinks once, and I got moved from coach G, immediatley after I was served the starter, as it was being declassifield, despite me deliberatley checking with FC hosts that it wasn't being declassified, but that's another story...

By NUS were you meaning YP railcard discouts (ie anyone under 26, and those over 26 still in full time education), or is there a special Virgin/NUS discount scheme?

I don't have a clue, I don't buy tickets lol.
I don't have a YP railcard. I was just wondering if there were any student discounts or anything without railcards and that. ...well, I was assuming there wasn't, but hoping someone would correct me :p

Breakfast is good generally pre 9AM, but post 9AM it tends to dribble... the afternoon snacks are ok - the Primo meal tends to be quite ok if you get the right FC hosts as said before. I have yet to try the Curry Club though...

No, sadly not, ATOC aren't that nice 8-). The only student discount I am aware of, having traveled many miles by rail in my now 9 years as a student, is the YP Railcard one. Interestingly, most banks now offer a 4 or 5 year YPR when you open a Student Bank account with them. These are available to under-18's normally, and effectively it is £100 of free stuff 9better than a CD player IMHO).

If you want to go First, you'll need to pay full fare, unless there are Virgin Value advances, in which case you can get a Y-P discount, providing you purchase a Y-P. You can get the price down to £27.70 single providing you book well in advance (e.g. I can get that price on 3rd December, they're not yet available on 11th December).

If you don't get a Y-P then the price is £42, so it's well worth getting one!

Not for Gizzy, she's got the priv remember - what's the point of buying a £20 item you're only going to use once in a year?

You mean a £5.50 item (effectively). Yes, you're right, if she only wants this one single and only ever wants to make this journey once and is absolutely sure of that. If she's going to make this journey, it's a great chance to get a Y-P for only £5.50.

I recently travelled on the last Liverpool - Euston in the morning, between 09:50 Crewe and London
That was £40.00
It's not primo, but breakfast is served as you leave Stafford

All the other services with primo from Manchester are limited stop
Last one of the day from Manchester is at 10:15 and this should be cheaper

I thought Primo was only on services ARRIVING into EUSTON before 09:00?

What he means, is that the 10:15 ex Manchester is the last one from there to offer Breakfast. The 10:45 onwards, will be all day snacks.

One thing which Gizmogle could do, if she was really desperate to get a Breakfast Pendo is:

Get the 09:34 AW service from Manchester Picc (Or around 09:45 from Stockport if your coming from Buxton), arriving into Crewe at 10:15.

Then catch the 10:34 Crewe to Euston, arriving 12:26, which, even though it will be way after 09:00, should feature the Great British Breakfast, with service usually straight after Crewe.

Says restricted restaurant service on here - on all services up to the 1053 Crewe - London inclusive. 1A95 1019 Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston has "first class meals included". 1M12 0810 Glasgow Central - London Euston says restricted restaurant service as well but I'm assuming that's only for part of the journey. :)

On Where?

Your right in saying that the 08:10 only has breakfast for part of the journey, as it will do it until Oxenholme/Lancaster, but then serve all-day snacks after Crewe.

I've always wondered if the FC hosts on Pendos have set stations where they start going through with food, especially north of Preston, as i've never had a Pendo on the WCML north of Preston*

Apart from when I did Glasgow-Preston via the S&C on a Sunday afternoon this May.

Primo Breakfast is served on :
05:28 Holyhead - Euston
06:33 Lancaster - Euston
06:35 Manchester - Euston
06:45 Manchester - Euston
07:05 Manchester - Euston
07:07 Liverpool - Euston
07:45 Birmingham - Euston

The only split Primo Breakfast I can find is :
08:34 Crewe to Rugby or Milton Keynes
All others go straight to Watford or Euston

Standard Breakfast is served on all other trains departing Glasgow, Carlisle, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Euston before 10:40

Where are train departs other stations after 10:00 those stations may not be offered Standard Breakfast, and the 08:10 from Glasgow to Euston is an example, as the last station to be offered Standard Breakfast is Oxenholme
Passengers from Lancaster onwards are offered the standard menu
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Tried these for Monday 05 November, not sure when you plan to travel, but lets you see current fares
Primo Breakfast is served on :
08:34 Crewe to Rugby or Milton Keynes
£48.50

Primo Breakfast is served on :
05:28 Holyhead - Euston
07:48 Crewe - Euston
£98.50

Primo Breakfast is served on :
06:33 Lancaster - Euston
07:46 Stafford - Euston
£87.00

Primo Breakfast is served on :
06:35 Manchester - Euston
£145.00
07:13 Crewe - Euston
£116.00

Primo Breakfast is served on :
06:45 Manchester - Euston
£145.00
07:24 Stoke-On-Trent
£112.50

Is it really worth the extra £50 for the extra course!

Yeesh. It's all a little expensive isn't it?

How's MML for first class? Do they do any special meals or anything like VWC do?

I wasn't impressed by MML First Class
However, I base my reviews on cost per hour, and MML is one of the most expensive at £30 per hour

If you take the £40 I paid for Crewe - Euston, that is £20 per hour
The £48.50 I quoted for Crewe - Rugby is even higher, but that is about the cheapest you can get "Primo Breakfast"
At all other times VT First Class works out at about £15 per hour
At weekends this is typically £10 per hour, and is on a par with Standard fares

GNER is the cheapest at about £18 per hour, but you don't get any "free" food
Purchasing the equivalent food between London and Glasgow then exceeds what VT offer (even comparing Euston / Kings Cross - Edinburgh)

I was quoted £45 for a "single berth" sleeper supplement
Are the solo offers still available?
I wasn't aware that a meal was included in the fare?
The breakfast to Standard and First Class passengers is the same and basic
Or do First Class passengers get "cooked breakfast"?

Single Berth is just 1 bed in the Berth at 1390mm
Get a host service with lil nibbles and drinks
Get a breakfast grill (it isn't much though), newspaper.

Twin Berth is standard class basically and get the above apart you got to go to the host, in the morning she gives you a lil "box of goodies called a breakfast" then tea n coffee.

First Open Returns gets you refreshment vouchers from the On board lounge car also a Buffet service fo the seated bit.

Showers at Fort William are free for sleeper customers now but not sure on the exact restricitons as such.

I've travelled a few times on a SAVER Return and booked a Standard Solo Sleeper (cost about £30)
Doesn't seem to be available any more, can you check that for me?

That's the one
I enquired about it and was quoted £45, but the assistant wasn't able to book it
I now understand why I as I was purchasing either a Standard SAVER single Falkirk - London or Westerton - London
