The Strathspey Railway are one step closer to Grantown-on-Spey.

The Strathspey Railway Charitable Trust is delighted to announce that a major step in the “Rails to Grantown” project is planned for mid-February. A steel bridge structure, donated by Network Rail in 2008, which used to cross Merry Street in Motherwell will be re-installed over the River Dulnain to carry the Strathspey Railway further towards its Grantown destination. A massive rail-borne Kirow 1200 crane, operated by Colas Rail, is coming north to lift the bridge beams into position. 39 Engineer Regiment based at Kinloss, plan to assist with later bridge work. Once in place, Strathspey Railway staff and volunteers will make plans to lay track across the bridge and over the Muckrach Estate lands towards the planned tunnel under a re-aligned A95. Grantown will then be just one mile away!

Excellent news, this means the Strathspey is within sight of running between two fair sized towns and with a main line connection.

That is good news indeed. Am I reading this article correctly, are they going to have to dig a tunnel under the A95 ? if so that will be a huge project.

Transport Scotland will build a bridge for the railway to run under as part of a scheme to realign a section of the A95. It's a few years away yet.

Great to see the bridge being put in place and BBC Scotland plugging it on the local news.
Fair play to all involved.

What is the length of the steel bridge structure that will span the River Dulnain ?
the strathspey railway state on their web site that the "gap" is 80 feet. I seem to remember that the length of the girders when they were in use at Ravenscraig was 27 metres, although the web site does not state as to whether the girder length has been altered during the refurbishment. I know that there have been some alterations, since the skew on the Dulnain bridge differs from the Ravenscraig installation.

Was a double track bridge at Merry St If I remember correctly it was a 9ft skew. It has gone back in as a single track bridge on the opposite skew using the two outer girders. The bridge decks were held in with 1000+ 1" dia bolts.
