Gerald had brake problems last week & was cancelled, the spare set was used the following day, link here http://nwrail.org.uk/nwnews.htm

As to your question, you are buying the upgrade on the day, so in my opinion no,

I asked about this onboard many years ago, and was told at the time that I'd have to "excess" my advance ticket to an anytime ticket first ,and then pay the upgrade as well. I decided to buy order some food from the buffet and stay in standard instead.

To be honest, the standard in gerald is much better than much 1st class accomodation across the country

I agree, with WG having spent £3.5 millions to refurb the two sets,it should be in my opinion, however Geralds 1st Class & Standard run the least miles of any similar trains a mere 400 miles a day x 5 days.

The matter regarding 1st class availability still appears to remain.

I want to book
Monday 14 July 2014
1st class single Cardiff Dep 17:16 to Shrewsbury

I can't find the fare anyone help?

East Coast is offering the 1ST Anytime Single for £59.80 on the 1716 on the 14th July.

But i wonder if you can purchase a STD Advance for £17.00 and then pay the ATW Prem Upgrade £32.50 (ticket i believe is a supplement for the meal and to sit in 1st Class) which would work out cheaper all together at a cost of £49.50.

Looking at BRFares I can see nothing in the fare conditions to prevent this, provided it is done before joining the train. BTW there is no First Advance for this journey

ATW customer service emailed me back after it had been corrected, so I was left looking a little silly :P I tried to go on the morning WAG on Monday 28th April but I missed the train after a rather drawn-out fight with the car park ticket machine at Bangor station. It later turned out that I had mumps so it was a good job I missed the train.

Apparently, Gerald will remain 67 worked and will not switch over to 68s along with Chiltern.

the contract expires May 15 and the current regime in the Bay is different to those that signed up for Gerald. Chiltern has nothing to do it with it.

Yeah, I know that :P There were rumours going round after the Chitlern announcement that Gerald will also get 68s, but this is nit the case. If Gerald IS kept after May 2015 (which is far from a given, despite everyone on here hoping it will (myself very much included :P )) it will stay with the 67s, and not get 68s.

Hope you beat the machine,

Bob

Nope, first it refused to accept my license plate, and then it would only sell me a weekly ticket, so I gave up and moved to one of the University car parks which I have a permit for. I then ran back to the station just as Gerald was pulling out. Goodbye advance tickets :P

Is that the original car park at Bangor station? I haven't parked there since the 'new' one opened, the machines there do not, thankfully, require your reg. number (always a struggle in the dark, with a queue, half asleep and without my specs!)

Gerallt stock will be having a test run to Manchester on a Saturday in early June , the loco hauled diagram Llandudno-Manchester-Holyhead-Manchester-Chester is now expected to start in Dec 14,five months earlier than expected, 6 mk 3s have been purchased for use expected to be load 4 and loco and dvt.

My sources tell me the test run is June 8th and apparently the Dec 14 diagram starts/ends at Crewe.

The 0740 off Chester is currently the 4 car 158 diagram isn't it? Looks like they'll be transferring to the Cambrian for May 15 enhanced services.

Doesn't the 4-car 158 split at Chester though, or is that a different 4-car 158? If it does split at Chester, one of the two units will presumably still be needed for the other service west of Chester. Every little helps though, introducing a LHCS set to release even one regional express unit for other regional express work gets a thumbs up from me.

The 0712 Manchester is the 4 car 158. The 0740 is a 175 job.

Also, at present, the 0740 off Chester is the 0634 from Llandudno, so it looks like that service may be altered.

As Tracky states, the 0712 from Chester is the 2x158, which then forms the 0850 from Manchester Piccadilly, and that's the one which splits at Chester.

It seems the 0950 Manchester-Holyhead LHCS set will replace the 175 to Llandudno.

Just another thought - is Mayfield loop long enough to accommodate a LHCS service, or will it have to stable elsewhere during the layover?

I have to ask the question, who is paying for the rental of the Mark 3s/DVT and 67?, is it Welsh Government,

It was supposed to be a 4 car 158, but it never materialised,the 0740 is a 3 car 175, the 4 car 0712 includes the 0600 2 car 158 out of Wrexham.
If the 0712 becomes a 3 car 175 all hell will break loose due to overcrowding.

Certainly will free up a 175 though and in theory the Wrexham redouble should allow the 2 hourly Holyhead to Cardiff trains to need one fewer unit.

I presume one fewer unit,if a service terminates at Chester or Junction, otherwise I cant see a unit being saved, the Redouble will only save a couple of minutes with Rossett to Wrexham General being untouched.

Should have been a bit clearer combined with Cardiff re signalling they will be able to turn them in Central on a regular basis instead of the 2 hr potter at Canton as now.

3x 67 and 3x DVT already paid for by WAG for Gerald. My guess is only the mark3s will be extra, which seems to be supported by:
Gerallt stock will be having a test run to Manchester on a Saturday in early June , the loco hauled diagram Llandudno-Manchester-Holyhead-Manchester-Chester is now expected to start in Dec 14,five months earlier than expected, 6 mk 3s have been purchased for use expected to be load 4 and loco and dvt.
(my bold) Although I'd be supprised if they have actually been bought rather than leased. Good question though, who's paying for the extra stock?

Thanks for clearing that up. One 175 diagram replaced by LHCS then, although what will run 11:50 Llandudno Junc. - Llandudno?

DB acquired the stock for use where required. ATW still pay DB - funding currently provided by the WG.

It would make more sense to make the 0712 loco hauled and encourage those who use the 0740 to travel earlier.
